I've got an Asus 5850 bought nearly 2 years ago, recently had another go at overclocking AGAIN but can't get the core to above 810 before the driver crashes running furmark. Would it be worth flashing the bios and if so where would i be able to get it? Cheers!

first of all, and what are you using to overclock?
If using MSI Afterburner, have you enabled the unofficial overclocking thing in the cfg file?

afaik you can only flash reference cards, if your card is non reference, dont flash it (afaik)
here is a list of some of the bios updates for the HD 5850 (or use google)

i may be wrong with some of the info above.
just make sure you do your research first, as you can brick your card.
and ALWAYS make a backup of the existing bios first.

maybe a more knowledgeable member will answer this thread. ;)

The bios is already unlocked, I'm using Afterburner. I'm not sure if it's reference i'll have to check, as I understand it it's just whether or not the pcb is made by AMD and should say so?

yes it will usualy say AMD just above the gold contacts on the gpu.
also the fan will usually be at the rear end of the card and not in the middle.

all the info you need.

also i have to ask this, are you sure you are doing it right? its been a while since i overclocked my HD 5850, but they are usually easy to overclock (especially the reference cards)
i got mine to 1000/1100 with a small bump in voltage.

if you are using the newest driver, try using an older driver instead. it sounds to me to be more of a driver issue than a bios issue.

I think so, i have a feeling it could be my PSU, it makes a loud screeching noise and doesn't shut up but if i shut down it stops. I was ocing when it was quiet left fur mark running for 3 hours at 1200mhz memory and it was fine. I then tried it at 1205 mhz for 15 minutes fine again, but during the duration of the benching the psu started to scream again but it didn't crash. I then upped it again to 1210mhz and it crashed straight away so i went back to 1200mhz (stable) and it crashed immediately also.

atm i'm trying 725/1210 with a quiet psu after a restart and it hasn't crashed yet.

EDIT: Also my card is a reference card.

My memory was stable at 1210 but after testing i noticed screen tearing on my browser, what would you suppose I do? More volts? I've put my clocks down to 1175 and it seems to be better.
