5850 on the way...

Have you got access to another PC to test the card in? At least that way you'll know if it's DOA or not.

If not try the good old fashioned clear cmos, it's worked for some.

I'll have a go with the CMOS clear and see what happens. I need to phone up the vendor for the RMA, so will do that in the mean time. I'll not be able to post it back until tomorrow at the earliest anyway.

Cheers,

Rich

Right - gave it a last ditch attempt with a CMOS clear, switching ram... etc... Nothing. Am sending the card back tomorrow - not sure whether to go for a refund, or switch it out for another 5850...

What's the equivalent nvidia? A 470?

Cheers,

Rich

sorry to hear whats happening rich. i was nervous as hell when mine arrived today and i fitted it. Reading these threads over the last few days had made me to be sure that the 8pin and 6pin pcie were pushed in firmly. Booted up first time. Not sure if u have a duff 5850 or what :(

Cheers chap - good to hear that yours was working. Mine's being RMA'd tomorrow - hopefully it is duff and I get a refund/replacement without too much hassle.

No harm done; just a couple of wasted hours!

At least the 260 is still in working order.

All the best,

Rich

Probably - had a look at the 470s earlier. Seems they cost up to £70 more for the same performance (give or take), runs hotter, louder and needs a pretty beefy PSU. Pretty much the antithesis of what I'm after!

I'm a bit busy over the next couple of weeks, so will re-investigate gpus in a bit. Might be tempted by a 5850 again if the right one is in stock, for the right price. Might also look to invest in a more robust psu (mines a 500w - handles the 260 fine, so by all accounts should have worked fine with the 5850). But that's another day!

Cheers and all the best,

Rich

Come on! Give ATi one last chance im sure you wont be disappointed with the card and the 470's are wayyyyyyy expensive :P

Have fun what ever you do

-Michael

Im close to selecting a card but these problems with 5000 series cards not booting are making me nervous. Im already nervous cracking open my PC case but fiddling with RAM to make a new card work? Whats going on hee hee. Maybe I wait for ATI to fix this problem!

If you think of how many 5850s have been sold and how many people on here have had issues with them from the start, Id say there isnt that many.

Ive never really been a fan boy of either and have owned a number of different green n reds and ive said it before so ill say it again . . . . . .

"The MSI 5850 (765/1125) is the best card ive owned since the ATi 9800 Pro" :D

oh and 1000/1175 on air

What fan speed is that on?

Max fan speed is 45%, which is soon drowned out by speakers/headphones/screams of "wtf? How can you not die after a whole clip???!"

I'm sure I just had a duff one - it's going back today so I should get my money back without too many issues.

I'll probably try for another one, but I'm a bit busy the next couple of weeks, so I'll wait til then. There may be some more stock about - and of course the added bonus that prices sometimes come down too!

Cheers for everyones suggestions and support.

Rich

GL getting your 5850, my x2 asus 5850s have been taking 30+ days

Maybe - the one I received (and have now subsequently returned) was an XFX - didn't have to wait long for it; ordered and arrived within a week at the most. Admittedly I chose that particular card as it was in stock.

Perhaps that's a lesson - maybe I ought to be more discerning with which manufacturer I choose in future...? is there a great deal of difference between say, ASUS, XFX, Sapphire etc...? Bearing in mind I was only going for stock speeds.

Cheers,

Rich
