I need to make an immediate choice to upgrade from my 4870 512MB because it's on the way out. OCUK have a deal for the Sapphire 5850 which is in the price range I'm looking around. I was looking at the 6850 and 6850 Toxic but would spending the extra money be worth it? I'm looking at reviews and some say the 5850 is better which I find hard to believe when comparing the prices.

This graph shows what I mean. Don't know if its reputable.

68xx series were made to draw less in comparison to the 58xx. However it is a minimal amount between them.

5850 overclocks aswell;)
I would get the Sapphire 5850's as they are preoverclocked

I'm prepared to be wrong on this but those Sapphire have stock speeds, If you are right then it's only buy a very small amount.. barely worth noting.

Also, check the official Sapphire owners thread.. people can barely OC them 80 MHz :D :D

i have a Sapphire hd5850, the reference model, (not the one cleecooo reccommended) i have it at 800 and 1200 and there is still room for more.
you need to edit the .cfg file to unlock the voltage control.
then use amd gpu clock tool to go higher than MSI Afterburner will let you.

i can't talk about other cards, but from my own research, the Sapphires are good overclockers

comparison between hd5850 and hd6850

hmmm, just had a look and they are at stock!
haven't had a look at that thread yet

6850 = roughly 5830 performance

6870 = 5850

etc....ATI/AMD changed their numbering ranks for the 6*** series cards making it a bit confusing to the uninitiated

In the reviews I have read, the HD6850 is only a fraction behind the 5850 in most, generally older, games, but beats it newer games with tesselation etc.

Remember power consumption is quite a bit lower and it also only requires one 6-pin power, whereas the 5850 needs two.

Both have their advantages, tbh.

Just had the most unbelievable thing happen, I honestly can't comprehend it. It's like some being is watching over me and trolling me in real life.

The card randomly froze the computer like it's done many times but this time it wouldn't boot up again. It has done this before but after trying to boot about 8 times I knew something serious was up. I had just RMA'd a motherboard which suffered the same fate and the exact same thing was happening to this one, I just couldn't believe it - motherboard bricked itself again.

But then after leaving it off for a few minutes and trying again it worked and booted and I'm using it now. It's like the card knows it's going to be replaced. I have this weird feeling it's going to take the motherboard out before it gets here on Monday.

I don't normally take rage out on inanimate things but after the **** this card has put me through I think I'm going to smash it to pieces when the new one comes to release the evil spirits that dwell within.

You made the right choice getting the 5850, I sold my Direct CU 5850 a while back when the 6870's first came out and it turned out to be pretty pointless because they performed quite the same. I'm just a **** for new tech though :p
