My brother had just decided on a 6850 for gaming at 1680 x 1050 and I found a cheap-ish one (relatively) but I just noticed that the older 5850 seems faster in benches (only checked a couple but it was consistently faster in Crysis and a couple of others). OCUK has a 5850 now for only £108 which seems like great value.

Obviously the newer cards are, um, newer but is there any other reasons not to go with the 5850? It just looks faster and cheaper

Cheers.

The cards have pretty similar performance.

The 5850 is cheaper because it's now EOL.

The 5850 is now quite a bargain. It will just use more power than a 6850.

Cheers for all the replies, that's what I thought.

Re: the 5870, it's £50 more than the 5850 and I presume I can clock a 5850 to near 5870 speed.

5850 for £108 looks pretty sweet, cheers.

I would be surprised if you didn't clock the 5850 past 5870's speed.
