5850 or 6870?

Hi guys,

I'm winding myself up, as I'm not sure which to go for? (5850 or 6870?) + I want to order by today

The MSI Hawk 6870 is on offer, with £10 off. So is the Sapphire 5850 with £5 off.

Is the extra on the 6870 worth it?

The 5850 is more card per penny, but personally I think I'd go for the 6870 if you feel like you're okay with spending those extra pounds. It's a slightly better Crossfire scaler if you'd want to get another one later on, and its DX11 performance is a fair bit better.

Nothing in it really.. could always add another 5850 down the line aswell n would be cheaper now.

as above really, id go for the 6870 mainly for the better scaling and the slight performance increase with dx11

I actually take the "card per penny" thing back. Looking at some recent testing and a performance/cost compilation on SweClockers made in April, the 6870 is actually the sweetspot for performance/penny.

The ATI 6870 is a good card for the money right now. It's true there is little between the 5850 and 6870, but the 6870 has better DX11 performance, more performance increase with newer drivers and better scaling in crossfire. The 6870 overall is also slightly better for newer games, whereas the 5850 is better for older ones, as you can roll back the drivers further if you have any problems with the latest ones.

Yeah, thought it was best to spend an extra £20 on a more recent card

6870.

1. Will have more driver support from AMD.
2. Scales better in xfire.
3. Tessalation is better.
