5850 Overclocking Max

Just recently bought a Z-XFX Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card, its coming on Tuesday, I was wondering what the max overclock possible is with this sort of card for the core and memory and if I will be able to modify the voltage.

The stock code for it is Z1-GFX-HD-585X-ZAFA btw.

Most 5850's seem to manage around 800-850 core / 1150-1200 mem clocks without any voltage tweaks.

With extra voltage you might be able to get 900-950 core / 1200-1250 mem, or higher if it's a good card.

Since it's a non-reference design 5850 you've bought, I suspect that MSI Afterburner won't let you modify the voltage but give it a try anyway.

If it doesn't work then find Sapphire Trixxx 3.02 beta via Google, as it could let you modify the voltage - it works here on a different style non-ref XFX 5850.

Either way, if you manage 900-925 core / 1200 mem then you'll have 5870 performance for about £50 less.

Voltage increase's wont get you any more out of the memory clock, just the core. The max stable you will get on the memory is the max without any voltage increase.

My 5850 can go 900 core stable with voltage increase and 1300 on the memory.

Its a MSI Twin Frozr 5850 and i've heard as far as 5850's go there not that great overclockers compared to reference and other models, although from 725 stock to 900 on the core im more than pleased.

Got a 850/1175 overclock ATM on stock voltage, havn't got any artifacts or anything when benchmarking, going to keep upping it until I have to up the voltage.

Edit:

Stable up to 895/1200 at stock, going to up the voltage a bit to increase the core more.

max overclock is 960/1200 at 1.214v I went up to 995/1200 when i upped my voltage to 1.3v but I heard that 1.25v is the max you should go on so I lowered it.

Mine is sapphire non-reference 5850 and I get 900MHz core and 1200MHz memory stable without any voltage tweak as it is disabled in msi afterburner.

My current overclock is now 960/1250 at 1.214v I went up to 995/1250 when I upped my voltage to 1.3v but I heard that 1.25v is the max safe.

Is that ok stock cooling?. How are you testing your 5850 so it's stable?.
I want to overclock my 5850 a well so I've been reading this.

Grab Gpu-Z to use for monitoring temps. Or use the OSD function of Afterburner to see them on-screen when gaming.

For testing I've just used a couple of runs through Heaven 2.1 / 3DMark 11, and then playing the games I normally would.

What is the maximum safest voltage for 5850 overclock and if someone can link to me 5850 thread which I remember was on this forum few days ago and dealt with 5850 voltage question

Edit: Seems to be more user friendly than msi after burner. However I still can't change the voltage. It is fixed at 1008 or 1.008v if I guessed it correctly

I think Trixx only works on some non referenced 5850s, try using a different driver?

You can change the voltage in MSI Afterburner, you've got to enable 'unofficial overclocking' which you do by opening the config file in the program folder and changing the value for 'unofficial overclocking' from '0' to '1', then save and exist. I had to change the permissions in the file's properties to be able to this.

I can't seem to find the program folder for 5850 in C drive

lol. There are couple of AMD and ATI technologies folders but can't seem to find it. Which folder is it exactly?

I think you were referring to msi afterburner folder. I changed the value from 0 to 1 in the afterburner cfg file but still can't change the voltage. I think it is fixed by the manufacturer.
