Ive had my 5850 direct cu for a few months now and i like it a lot, it plays everthing i want it to play on ok settings, i like the new 460 range and was interested in this model. so im wondering if this would be a bit of an upgrade to my card, as i think i will get around £170 for my card, i wouldnt mind the change to nvidia for a bit.

Fixed for you

So, you're going to sell you're top end 5850 for a GTX 460, which is noticably worse if both are overclocked.

Good idea, definately.

What is the point of downgrading!!!

5850 to 460 - No.

5850 - 470 - Maybe ; but worth the £40+ it's going to cost you?

Logical answer is wait - if you cannot then has to be the 470

As others have said, a 460 would actually be a slight downgrade.

Unless you absolutely need a new gpu now, I would wait a few weeks to hear what the ATI 6000 series has to offer.

460 is a bit of an odd path from a 5850 as mentioned above...

470 clocked to 800MHz (or more possibly) is one possibility - I guarantee it will give smoother, more consistant performance than the 5850. Unless you play at very high resolutions clock for clock the 470 is so close to the 480 you really wouldn't notice the difference while playing so unless you can get one "cheap" or play at 2560x its not worth the extra.

460, huge downgrade, not 5850 to 5770 proportions, but half way there, as games get tougher more and more games will begin to show the 30-40% speed difference MANY games already show, most that don't are more cpu limited, or daftly old and offer ridiculous performance on anything over a 5770 anyway.

470 sidegrade basically, if you have a reference 5850, frankly with decent cooling it should be capable of 1000Mhz overclock, stock cooling, 900-950Mhz, non reference (non overvolt supporting aswell) then overclock might be limited and a 470 would be a good option if you lost little to no money in the chance.

480/5870, worthless upgrade, faster, but not enough to be worth selling your card and spending £100-150 extra for either card, you're talking 10% extra for a 5870, and 15-30% for a 480gtx.

The only "large" upgrade you'd get at this point would be to sli/xfire or maybe a 68xx based card, pretty much every other option will offer you incredibly poor value for money.

I would wait for the 68xx cards. I went from 5850 to a 470 and while the numbers maybe a little better, in games i can not really tell at all.

most people dont notice difference due to limitation in resolution anyway.
and yes its a downgrade.

I would wait for amd 6000 series.
its like 4 weeks away
