Is it worth the extra monies? I'd say on average its an extra £75

I'm only running one GPU and not interested in OC so would rather get the best I can out of the box but £75 is a big jump

It might be worth waiting until Autumn though, I have an 8800GTS to tide me over until then, anyone know whats on the horizon?

I don't think the extra is worth it unless you are playing at huge resolutions. There is very little that the 5850 can't play at the moment.

As for buying now, nobody can really answer that for you, but there will always be a reason to wait for the next best thing. If you are unhappy with your current card then get a new one. If you are worried about prices I don't think they are going to come down significantly in the near future. We do know that at some point AMD/ATI will release a new series of cards at some point, but we have no idea currently what they will be like.

Sorry I forgot to say native is 1680

Yeah I understand I could always be waiting for the next gen release or rehash, I have only just built my new PC so i'll see how my old card holds up and make a decision then, I suppose if i'm running at 1680 its makes more sense to go for the cheaper card but I would also like a larger monitor next year also so...

Definite no here. £100 for performance should give a noticable difference, and once you have clocked a 5850 you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a '70.

Wait till the 6000 series next year and bag one of them with your new monitor.

I dont know if I can wait a year, Crysis 2 will be out before then, plus like I say, i'm not overclocking, i'd rather buy the performance to start off with but £70 - £100 is a fair whack and I dont know how noticable it will be at 1680

6000 series though, i'll have a read

Monies?

Has some one been watching to much Fone Jacker / Face Jacker?

:p

I have a 4850, which I am quite happy with at the moment, so I'm just going to wait for the 6xxx series.

The 5850 is definately the better option though, 75 pounds for little improvement is not preferable.

Yea, im wating for crysus 2 to hit, and the 6000 series to come out.

My 3870x2 is adequate for now.

I may have bought a 5870 if the price had dropped sub £300, but it hasnt.

Absolutly no idea. No one knows.

But historically around Spetember ATI have been refreshing their GPU line ups.

Crysis 2 is due out in October I think.

"ATI is still preparing a next generation 40nm part to launch in late 2010 as 28nm from both Globalfoundries and TSMC won’t be ready before first half of 2011 and even then its questionable if they can pull some good yields.

Nvidia’s next generation GF104 chip is also planned for this summer, but most likely the latter part of the summer, and this chip might give ATI’s Radeon 5000 architecture a run for its money."

We know Southern Islands taped out months ago. Nvidias new g104 gtx 460 (not the same as gf100 gtx 465) should start to drive prices down. It should be about as fast as the 465 in current games and apprx 140W.

Nice thanks, i'll wait untill September, especially seeing as though I played BC2 last night with my old card in my new PC and it runs perfectly with everything on high and 4 x AA I am really pleased so no rush anyway I really want a new card in time for Crysis 2

Thats the wise choice!

Why spend £250 now, on tech that is nearly 1 year old.... when new stuff will be here in 3-4 months, and you can spend the same money on something better.

...or just save even more between now and September and you'll then not have the "£70 - £100 is a fair whack" problem to ddeal with :p
