5850 help

I really wanted to get the asus for the great overclocking but they are all sold out with no eta. I've found a powercolor else were for £215 do you think I should grab it or is it worth waiting for the asus or maybe buying a different card?

It looks like the card has a black board apposed to a blue or red one so maybe I could flash the bios if I wanted too. I assume that voids warranty though. Plus the picture could be wrong.

If it's reference desgin you can flash it. It does invalidate the warranty but if something goes wrong you could always flash it back ^^

i just got my powercolor card today. overclocks okay but no voltage tweaks without flashing the bios.... not willing to try that till i see what my max OC is normally... at 830mhz core /1160mhz memory atm,, seems to be hit and miss higher up.....

Is there any easy way to tell if its reference design? Its the standard powercolor 5850. It's got a black board in the picture which I thought was a sign.

So long as it is a reference board you will be able to bios flash it and overclock to around 1000MHz. If it is the dirt2 edition then you are ok.

Even the non reference boards overclock by a good 20-25%. It is just that the stock boards have voltage tweakability and allow for 30-35%. I have owned a few Powercolor boards and they have all been fine.
