I was wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on what upgrade path I should take? I am upgrading my rig soon to an i7 with x58 mboard and was thinking whether I should sell my current 4870x2 and get 2x5870 or just buy another 4870x2 (the cheaper option). I play mainly car racing games, and like FSX/FS2004 (but doesn't run very well on ati cards) and the odd bash at COD4.

Im sure the corsair 1000W could handle 4870x2 in CF :D

Well, there are several options to go for, but if i was in your position, i would keep the 4870x2, and then go for the 5870x2, I personally don't think Quad xfire/SLI are a good thing as there isn't enought gain to justify the price, so i wouldn't go X-fire with 4870x2 (IMO) COD titles like Nvidia though, but that's another story.......!

Wait for more replies beore deciding :)

As others have said, 5870 crossfire would be a far superior option. Quad GPUs don't really play so well together.

Waiting for the 5870x2 might be a better option though.

I would also say that given your situation, waiting for the 5870x2 might be the better option. The 4870x2 still seems pretty popular and a number of used ones have been exchanging hands recently.

The downside to waiting for the 5870x2 is that no one knows anything about a genuine release date. The NDA surrounding it seems even harsher than the 5870s was :(

4870X2 xfire great for the 30" screens but a bit wasted otherwise, the fourth gpu won't be working much. Two or three card / gpu will be the sweet spot.

Thanks for the insight. Looks like I shall be waiting for the 5870x2 then. In the meantime Ill invest in some updated cpu/mobo/mem combinations.
