My hard earned monies are being put towards other things at the moment and I would therefore like to squeeze as much out if my trusty 5870 as I can, rather than get an upgrade. The fan is also dying as it squeals sometimes and when it does not squeal, you can hear it humming.

Obvious choice is the Gelid Icy Vision Rev2, but I can see there are others out there which looks interesting, such as the DeepCool range.

Has anyone got any advice for me? Also has anyone re-mounted the stock cooler with new paste?

Budget around £30 max.

ta :)

That deepcool does look quite good, especially with its full depth 92mm fans. Out of price range though.

The Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus 2 is also a very good cooler and more than capable of colling your 5870, but again out of your price range. The Thermalright Shaman is also awesome but will take up a lot of room. Will cool the twangers off the card though and quietly.

What about the Zalman VF3000A if you can find one. Not very quiet from what I understand but probably quieter than the 5870 cooler.

Are we talking stock cooler on the 5870 or third party?

Cheers for your reply. The cooler on it is a stock Rev1 as came on the card. I know my budget is quite low but any more and I am venturing into the realms of being able to sell it and buy a second hand 6950. On a power budget. :D

Been trying to find some reviews of the DeepCool V400 as it can be had for £24. Single 120mm fan and runs very quietly, if the manufacturer is to be believed. Should run quieter and allow for a little more overclocking over the current cooler but just can't find any reviews for it.

I didn't see the V400 but it does look capable, being 120mm fanned. 5870 is in the supported list. The lack of reviews though is a tad worrying. Is it a new product or something? I'd imagine it'd be on the close side to taming a 5870 to be honest as the heatsink isn't massive but if it is that close you could always bung a Viper on there or something.

The image on that product has RAM heatsinks shown but no VRM sinks it seems. If it doesn't come with any, and that would be a massive oversight, then you'd have issues. I looked at some MOS-C1 a while back for this purpose.

I got the Accelero Twin Turbo Pro for my 6870 last month after my fan died, it knocked 15-20c off my furmark temps and is very silent. I got it from the rainforest for £25

Another vote for the Acclero Xtreme series. There is a thread around here where someone has 2 of them on their 5870's in crossfire. I also have on one my GTX 470 and temps dont go over 50c while playing BF3 or benching with Unigine.

I fitted a gelid cooler bought from a competitor last week on my dads 5870 and the temps are really good on it now. Was a tad tricky to fit, but overall not too hard. Idles at 31C and maxs out at 55C under load now and the fans are very quiet (22% fan speed!)

Is that the Icy Vision?

Thanks for advices chaps. I relented at the last second as have been told the Gelid Icy Vision should be back in stock on Monday so decided to order that from here.

Will report back once it has been fitted with some temps and my thoughts. :)

Do you want my spare stock cooler, don't need it as my 5870 is under water.

Thanks for the offer but I shall politely decline. It is ordered now anyway and I really want to try and oc and squeeze this card for all it's got now my funds are tight.

I suspect that a good clean up of the shroud and fan might stop it squealing and some decent paste on the cooler may drop the temps a bit but I really want to cool it as much as possible. :)

Shoulf do easily on 1000mhz on the core, mine doesn't break 48c on bf3:cool:

Any results yet?

I'm also thinking about buying this cooler for my 5850, but like you don't want to spend much especially as the new 78xx series cards should be out in March. I had been looking at the watercooling solutions but makes more sense to buy a newer card for the money :)

No results yet. I have it sitting on my desk but I am really busy at the moment. Probs not going to be able to fit it till next weekend now at the earliest as it is a bit time consuming and fiddly by all accounts.

Cool - that's putting me off fitting one TBH as they do look fiddly and maybe not easy to remove to replace with stock cooler...

Have you tried O/C on stock cooler? I found that 925MHz (from 725MHz stock) on the core is about safe for me, anymore then I need at least 50% on the fan control which sounds like a hair dryer :) - ran a Unigine Heaven benchmark at 1005MHz at 65% fan control and was hitting 80C on the VRMs and the core.
