Hello, I recently bought a (second) 5870 Vapor-X for my son as he wanted to crossfire his cards. However we are having a bit of trouble setting it up.

We can get the card seated correctly, the problem is that the cables that came with the second card are like so:

Both the power supply and the card can take the 6 pin connection, however I cannot see anywhere (on the entire board) where I am meant to plug in the other end?

Could anyone help? I realise I'm probably being completely stupid but my I'm not usually the one to deal with any computer related issues!

thats a cable to convert a 4 pin psu lead into a 6 for the gfx card power

edit: you only need it if you havent got a spare 6 pin psu lead but do have a spare 4 pin lead

First thing you should let us know is...what PSU has your son got?

If it is some generic crap PSU, the won't have the cables for running two cards...and the reason is obvious because they would be up to it.

I have a corsair 850 watt psu, I ordered some 6-pin to 8-pin cables on recommendation from a friend however i cannot connect both ends of the cable. Could someone post a picture of the type of cable I need in order to connect the card to the psu as I am really confused.
Thanks

The bit with the 3 pins inside should just connect to a spare molex connection in your pc and the 6pin into the graphics card, I am sure 5870 cards needs two connections each, something to do with each connector having a max power draw and not overheating

So no cables need to attach directly from the second card to the psu?
If so thanks a lot for the advice, it was just a little confusing as the card had in big bold writing 'THIS CARD MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE PSU' :P

If the power supply is a TX850 or HX850 you will already have four or six eight pin power connectors on the PSU.

You shouldn't need to use any adapters. Just use the cables already supplied with the PSU.

You just use the six pin part and leave the extra 2 pins detached.

They look like this:

Wrong.

Both cards need two 6 pin cables attached directly from the PSU.

You end up with something looking like this:

Two 6 pin power connectors from the PSU connected to each card.

That card defintely needs to be attached to the PSU.

Since you have a corsair 850W (HX or TX?) then it will come with at least four PCI-E power connections coming from the PSU itself (no need for those adapters). Each of these should have "PCI-E" written on the connectors in white.

Some (possibly all) of the PCI-E connecors will be of the 6+2 design, for use with the 5870 graphics card, just leave the (+2) part unconnected and plug in the two 6 pin connectors which are required to power the card.

Sorry to confuse but when I said connect the 3 pin part to a spare molex, that molex should come from the PSU..

I have 5870s in crossfire and mine needs 4 connections, two six pin each directly from PSU or as you have an extention which will be connected directly but with an extra bridge, card 6 pin/molex/molex/psu

Or as said above if your PSU should already have the PCI-E connectors it should be easy to connect directly

Okay, as this pc was a prebuilt I'm not sure if we have the proper/enough cables to connect both cards to the psu?

This is the psu, with slots that (I assume) I am meant to connect 1 end of the cable into?

Here are the cards, the top one already connected to the psu correctly, however I don't have a cable that can fit into both the psu and the card sockets.
The only 6 pin cables I have are

Sorry if I am being incredibly dense, as I said this is for my son as a present so I would like to get it all set up and working before he gets home from a holiday. I am not particularly tech savvy. Thank you for all your kind assistance :)

The 2 cables plugged into the existing 5870 are hard wired to the PSU.

You should have four more cables which plug into the blue sockets on the PSU.

Were you not given all of the extra cables which came with the power supply?

The power supply should have all these cables:

Are you sure they're not in a bag somewhere?

As surveyor says, that PSU should come with a little black bag bursting with extra cables to connect to it, including modular PCI-E cables.

If the place you bought the PC from didn't give you the cables then I would suggest contacting them and getting them to send them to you ASAP (as they are a required part of the PSU package).

Okay so the cables MAY be up in my sons flat which is a long way away, so I doubt I will be able to go up and get them any time soon.
Is there nowhere I can just buy some correct cables from? If I can and they aren't too expensive that would be much easier for me..

I can't see that they're sold separately anywhere.

You could always contact Corsair and tell them you've lost the cables and that you need 4 PCI-E power cables for a HX850.

They might be nice and send you some or arrange to sell you some.

The problem is they're based in the USA.
