I've seen some with the fan in the middle, while some opt for the fan at the end - which is generally considered the better option?
 
They all work in generally the same way,

the one downside is X-fire-X if the cards are going right next to each other they start sucking hot air out of one and into another

you need a good air flow around them, in my experience

If they are the ones the exhaust out the back of the case then they will not be sucking hot air from each other, but one will run hotter because of more restricted intake.
 
Fan at the end models are mostly revision 1 cards, fan in the middle are mostly rev 2's from what I've seen.
