I overclocked my 5870 through ATI Overdrive and the overclocked stats off the top of my head (cause i'm at work) were 900/1300. I ran 3DMark Vantage and it passed flawlessly, but i went on Dirt 2, played it for just over an hour and the screen went black so i had to press the rest button to reboot the computer.

Now, i'm curious as to whether the temperatures got too hot, meaning that i would possibly have to increase the fan speed because it was at 50% when it failed on Dirt 2. my system was overclocked to 3.9GHz stable and I couldn't check the temperatures for obvious reasons.

Any aid in this matter would be grateful.

Download GPU-Z and see what temps you are getting, try backing the clocks alittle and see what the gameplay your getting, did any artifacts come on whilst playing dirt 2, it is known that if you overclock to much strange things can happen, just something to keep an eye on

Nah, the visuals and everything was fine until the black screen came on during a replay. It ran fine on stock, and is currently on stock now and is running with no problems, and the temps were above 75c in 3DMark when it was overclocked, hitting 80c at times.

Edit: I could try updating the bios on the motherboard, haven't done it since i got it.

80c is pretty high, i know that ATI run at higher temps on load definately does sound like it's overheating. my geforce gtx 260 on load runs at 41 - 42 degrees.

if your getting black screens normally means that you overclocked it to much, try overclocking by 35 - 50 mhz each time, then once you start getting problems go back down to where it's stable.

becareful though overclock at your own risk, but watch those temps.
