5870 for £230

Was just browsing the web and found a xfx 5870 for the measly sum of £234.95, I thought this was a good deal, but I want to know whether the greater mind of Ocuk think it's worth a purchase.

No. The 6950 should 'hopefully' be around £250~, and be as fast as GTX480. But unfortunately the 6950/6970's release has been pushed back from November to December...

Another thing you should note is that 6000 serie's Crossfire scaling is better than 5000 series.

Too expensive for a card out in October 2009, the 470 performs about the same and costs £174.99 inc VAT a 5870 will run cooler. A 6870 with an overlock will be on par with a 5870 for the most part.

6870 will be a better choice.
If you're looking for more performance then I'll wait for the new stuff to come out and see how is it like.

5870s are going to drop big time, if you already have one now is the time to pick up an xfire bargain in the members market, I saw one struggling at £175 recently and it's only going to get cheaper

Well it will be faster but I'm not sure that I would value that speed increase at 140 quid PLUS the card!

£100 + card would be more like it, £140 isn't a complete ripoff but you'd probably get 50-60 for the 4870 and 5870's are probably worth 160-170 at the moment.

I blagged my 6870 at 179 including delivery and vat as a preorder to replace a pair of 4870's in crossfire so I got to keep both 4870 cards anyway so perhaps that's screwing my sense of value on your deal.

There's no problem getting a 6870 for £175 now and it's marginally slower than a 5870 (but uses less power and outputs less heat). If you really want a 5870, there's one in the MM sold for £165 inc. I wouldn't really want to spend more than £175 on a graphics card these days (GTX470/HD6870). The next performance upgrade comes with GTX480 at £295 and brings up noise, heat and power issues.

If you want to wait a little longer, there are GTX570 and HD6950 that will hopefully occupy sub-£240 price range.

Aghh ****! just seen the size of it compared to my 4870! Theres now way it will fit in my case anway! Hope the guy doesn't mind me pulling out of the deal.

Hold off for the newer cards to arrive. £235 is way too much for a 5870, i've just bought a XFX 5970 Black Edition for £280 of the MM. See if you can pick up any bargains there if you're desperate.
