The 6870 has much better crossfire scaling and tesselation than the 5870, and edges it out in most benchmarks.

6870 replaces the 5770

Wrong!

6870 is a replacement for nothing, the 5770 lives on with only a possible slight change to 6770 (not on roadmap)

For once I can actually answer this..

I bought a 6870 to replace a pair of crossfired 4870 foot heaters (pc is on the floor lol). It's a nice card but not Mac OS X friendly (yes i dual boot and use a hackintosh) so I bought a 5870 when OC had it on special and relegated the 6870 to my spare pc (its almost identical spec wise other than main pc has a samsung 1080p monitor and spare has an acer 1680 x 1050). I benched them both at 1680 x 1050 in various apps and its swings and roundabouts so much so that I would call them equal. In Heaven for example the 6870 comes in faster on both pc's than the 5870 - presumably that's the tesseleation tweaks.

I found another 6870 going cheap on ebay so now have crossfired 6870's back in the main pc and the 5870 is relegated to the spare.

Basically the 5870 and 6870 are roughly equal and no way on earth would I suggest you upgrade from a 5870 to 6870 - you would just be pi$$ing money away for no gain (excluding the enhanced eyefinity support).

Just my opinion but as I have both cards I thought I would reply - others may disagree or have different experiences of either or both cards but hey - I can only tell you what I have expereinced myself.
