5870 PCI Express query

Hi all. I recently downloaded the new look catalyst control center, and whilst having a look around the new layout I noticed that in the graphics hardware section it shows my maximum bus setting as PCI express 2.0 x8. I'm not the most knowledgeable person with things like this, but I wondered if this should show x16, and not x8, as the card is in a x16 slot. My graphics card is a 5870, and the motherboard is a gigabyte X58-UD3R. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Just checked my Catalyst (yes, the new one) and mine is showing as PCI Express x16.

I'm running a single 5870 on an Asus P5Q-E. I know it's not the same motherboard (or even the same socket) as yours but at least it shows it's not a generic fault in the Catalyst software. What does CPUz show your link speed to be? If CPUz is showing x16 then I'd just write it off as a quirk of the Beta Catalyst and maybe let AMD know if you're feeling generous.

Read this off the Gigabyte website.

(Note 2) For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.
(Note 3) The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots espectively. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is populated with an expansion card, the PC IEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.

May explain your predicament.:)
