Has anyone who has suffered from the vertical line crashing on a 5870 RMA'd their card and got one back that doesn't crash? I still don't know whether this is system specific or a faulty card as I don't have another machine to try it in. I have tried all the fixes on all the forums spread out over the Web but I still get the crashing. The same hardware ran a 280 GTX without ever crashing but this is a clean install with no remnant Nvidia Drivers.

Only suggestion I can make is that you should ensure that have up to date motherboard drivers.

I've read of a few 'problems' with 57/5800 series cards that have been solved with Bios updates. ( I cannot recolect any previous cards that have needed this - although it may have happened before:()

Methinks that even if you end up having to pay postage each way (because the card is not faulty) your probably past the point of wanting to carry on testing/adjusting/testing etc.

Although if you could try the card in another system and if such had no faults ???

I would also like to know! I've tried everything known to man to fix this problem to no avail, my BIOS is the most recent according to GPUz, so totally out of ideas! I think it's a powerplay problem, caused be Catalyst drivers, but I can't be 100% sure. I get a lot of 'whining' from my card, as chips heat up when entering 3D mode, It will then stutter, then crash to the screen below! It also seems to be a problem affecting Win7 64bit only according to my research. Should I RMA?, or wait for a possible fix, this is ridiculous, I waited 2 freakin' months for this card too! My card is an XFX btw. My 4870X2 is back in my rig meantime!

The glow is caused be a lamp in my room! Bad exposure has caused all the lines not to show! This 'pattern' covers the whole screen!

No not yet from what I've researched/read, AMD/ATi are aware of the problem with 64bit os, esp Win 7 and a fix should be available Jan/Feb. There is literally thousands out there with this problem! It mainly has to do with ATi's powerplay changing clocks/voltages when switching from 2D to 3D mode. I have a 2 year warranty so I might hold out till then before returning it.

Running an xfx 5870 myself on skt 775 but with xp 32bit.

Bought Win 7 and intend to 'upgrade' to 64bit but will hold off for a bit now!

Your approach looks to be the best one - assuming it can be solved with a driver/CCC adjustment ( this months update ??) .

The only way for me to run 3D games without crashing is to increase the Vcore on GPU to 1.2v using MSI Afterburner. I hope that it's not stressing the GPU too much but the temps are ok and looking at the Asus XXX cards, they can be overvolted to 1.35v although I don't know how this effects their warranty.

Am guessing but would assume that any increase in voltages would be a breach of the warranty :(

Having looked at the xfx web site I noticed that they produce (by the looks of it) their own version of the Asus/Msi voltage tools BUT it's only available for the 5900 series 'black' edition.

I haven't overclocked mine , never mind overvolt so have no idea where one can read the voltage being put through; can I see it using gpu-z, speedfan, everest ? and if so advise as to where would be much appreciated.

Having re-read the thread realised that you have not stated which make of card you have - my comments ref warranty are made with an xfx 5870 only.

I have a Powercolour 5870 but updated to the latest ATI bios downloaded from Techpowerup.com, only because of the crashing. I downloaded MSI Afterburner which works well with this card. I don't know if it would work with the original bios but I think Powercolour uses an ATI bios anyway. It allows you to alter the Vcore, clock and memory speeds and create your own profile for the fan. You can also check the Vcore and log temperatures using GPU-Z.
