Hi my 5870 is kinda running loud and a bit hot and I was thinking of getting an aftermarket cooler for GPU can anyone suggest a good cooler?

I know upgrading it would be the best solution but I can still run my games on this GPU so not planning on upgrading it just yet.

I replaced the heatsink and fan assembly on my dads 5870 a few years ago with the following:

Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5870 ATI HD5870 VGA cooler

Makes it barely audible and keeps the temps well under control. The VRM heatsinks are a bit fiddly though to fit, but otherwise its a great piece of kit. However, due to the second hand market value of these cards, you might as well not bother as it'll cost you atleast £20 to find the cooler.

Thanks for your reply, gonna see if I can find that cooler. If there's any other good kit out there please do recommend :)

I haven't checked my GPU temp but I can tell its getting hot and loud at times when I'm playing my game.

Edit: Been thinking of removing the cooler and clean it properly and apply new thermal paste.

Replace the TiM, I'd honestly not bother getting an aftermarket cooler for a card that old.. you'd be better off saving and just snapping up a 280x or 770 rather than spending more money on an old card

Agree with Gef. Take the card apart and give it a good clean and replace the thermal paste. Also add a couple of drops of some bearing oil to the fan. It should then behave as it was new.

is the fan bearing knackered if so get a new fan for about a tenner and replace along with some new paste . ive just done my 5850 in my lads pc and it idles@24 c with the fan@30 %

cheers

Not quite sure if the bearing is making the noisy i just think its running a bit hot so the fan is working as hard to cool it down. How big is this gpu fan i can replace it with?

I had two XFX ones, both of them ran about that at load. It was just a relatively hot card compared to todays.

Couldn't agree more, but for my needs this card can still hander my games at high settings. I would watercool it but only if i can OC my whole rig but im only using 4570 i5.
