Ok, so was playing BFBC2 yesterday.... and I got an almight slow down in fps, it basically became a still image for about 1-2 secs before it resumed.

At the time of the slowdown, yes, I was in an epic gun fight, lonely me, vs one of the Apache helicopters.... full server with plenty of action going on.

My pc specs are:

QX9650 @ 3.7ghz
4gb 800mhz Ram
5870 2gb stock settings (10.9 display driver only, no CCC)
x48 mobo
stock speed hdd 7200rpm...
Win 7 64
Internet connection maxes out at 1.6MB/s

Since I bought the gpu in July, its pretty much run the game failry flawlessly, but I have noticed that my fps seem to be different on different days, probably based on the server Im connected to or mine or others pings...

It cant be network lag that caused such massive slow down?

Im currently playing the game with absolute max settings..... very very infrequently do I see any slow down... just a bit puzzled why it basically slowed down to a still image yesterday.

What do other 5870 owners have in the game graphics settings??

Im thinking I might lower AA and AF settings...... or I hear that HBAO can be turned off as no difference is noticed with it on or off, but with it on it kills fps??

I personally belive its the HBAO which is the DX11 effects in the game.....

Do you think, I should install the Catalyst Control Center?? As currently I just run the display driver and the application profiles, and have done happily for years. But is it holding back performance of the card?

I thought HBAO was shadows and it was a total fps killer, some shots in the link below showing on and off, link below and a few comparisons.

HBAO is a form of SSAO (screen space ambient occlusion), which essentially calculates areas that light cannot reach, due to surrounding objects, to give more realistic shading

It's not you card as I get it too (only on certain servers) with my 5970 + 5870.

It seems like my whole system is trying to access something and hogging all the resources for a second or two.

What do you think are the MAX lowest settings I can get away with and pretty much see no difference from max settings?

I will try HBAO on 2xaa, but AF I currently have it set to 16x...... probably too high?

i get it too my fps goes to nearly 0 randomly depending on the server....glad to here im not the only one its happening to.

So basically what im discribing is perfectly normal for BFBC2?

The game is great, a really good arcade military sim, but I think the dev's could have done a bit better with the coding....

Particualry server side, and network...

On the other hand.. I dont remeber seeing any issues with 10.8... only since 10.9 am I seeing cause for complaint... but then again this could be nothing but a coincedence.

Do Nvidia gpu owners also see this issue with the game?

I do believe that FPS in this can take a huge dive depending on the server you are connecting to.

I & other members of our clan have noticed when in games on different servers involving identical map/gametype/# of players FPS has varied by as much as 20FPS in some cases when looking at the exact same areas of the map in which no players are actually being rendered such as a particular wall.

Oddly enough when checking on some empty servers the FPS rate can change depending on the time of day you visit!

I have noticed this affect for many years, in various online games. If the server sucks, it actually effects the FPS. That is crazy IMHO, screen rate and network rate should not be connected.

A fair few of my mates with Win 7 have had this issue, I believe its something to do with DX11.

I on the other hand have never had slowdown issues with my lowly GTX260, but I think its more down to the fact I'm running it on XP and in DX9.

I wonder if I'm alone in this?

Awsome!!

Its good to know that I havent just purchased a garbage gpu!

So I dont need to lower the settings for my 5870?

If I can run it maxxed with a GTX260 (albeit in DX9 mode) and a pc with the spec of a calculator compared to yours - Hell no!

it basically became a still image for about 1-2 secs before it resumed.

I have had drops in fps, but not an out right still image - so that doesn't sound normal to me.

FYI in regards to settings I found in dx11 about: 10fps decrease for high shadows, 10 fps decrease for HBAO.

I've had this too..... not only in bc2 but arma2 and l4d2 as well.

It's not a regular thing..... it happens once every 10 hours of gameplay in bc2, and once or twice in 100's of hours of the other two games.

I'm pretty sure Barker is correct in saying it's caused by servers...... but I don't think it's caused by hogging resources: I run monitoring programs on my second monitor when I'm gaming, and when the glitch happens nothing maxes out...... the cpu, gpu and ram usage all stay steady.

The image actually freezes for you with laggy servers?

I get the old rubberband effect, but not a frozen image.
