5870 to 6970.....

Don't bother, the small amount of performance gain ain't work the extra power and heat or cost...wait for the 28nm process cards that's coming out at the end of the year would make more sense.

Yea, my 5870 is not letting me down to be honest with you.

The excitment is in purchasing, and wanting ratherthen using.....

So far, this 5870 has out performed expectations.

He really has been quite good.

Even managed Metro at 1920x1200 max settings with DOF & MSAA off (AAA used), which is the best most cards can hope for.

Although for 30% of the game I played with DOF on.....

As like all, I just like upgrades..... the only thing I can upgrade on this pc is an ssd.

My hdd performance could be better. It is the laggiest part ofthe computer.

Since your current card does everything you ask of it, Go for the SSD upgrade option, or buy some other peripheral - extra/better monitor, new chair/desk, Keyboard, Mouse, Headphones etc.

Don't bother with an upgrade to a single 6970 from your 5870. Either sit tight, or if you can't resist the upgrade itch get two 6950's and flash 'em.

I couldn't resist and I did, even a single 6950 flashed to 6970 is an improvent over the 5870. If you can get about 120 quid for your 5870, then 72 quid's (pesky xoom's got no pound sign;)) not much imo for a better gaming experience if you value your gaming.

I had the upgrade itch a few weeks ago too, but decided my 5870 is more then good enough and can't justify a small increase in speed and really would be a small increase I found out after trying a mates 6970 in my pc... So decided was time to update the TV to a new 50" plasma screen and add some HDDs to the TV for media recording and streaming.. I feel I did the right thing and really enjoying the upgrade I made now, I know if I had updated to a 6970 I would have been sat here thinking why did I do it and what a waste of time and money it was... Wait till next gen mate as I'm doing and hope there is a good jump in performance from the 5870.. Reality is the 6970 is not a huge jump more like when they took a 4870 and made it into a 4890.. Reality was in that case was most that updated from the 4870 to the 4890 saw no real difference in game play and only a few benchmarks showed the difference...

Always good to update HDDs and maybe add another screen to the pc ? Or even look at updating the sound to something better, this sort of thing will show real gain when updating and you will enjoy the pc more. I see you have 4Gb of memory maybe add another 4Gb too could increase your performance.

As most above, keep the 5870. I 'upgraded' from 5870 to 6950 and saw no real difference. Wasn't worth the time to swap the cards. New drivers have the 5870's smokin.

There may be the occasional game where there is a bit of difference, but not the ones I play. Heaven likes the 6900's though if you like to 'play' that ...lol.

I had the exact same card as you Powercolor 5870 2gb Eyefinity 6 untill the fan started to die sent it back and they offerd me a 6970 as a replcment.

Tbh I really like my 6970 but it isant really that much faster than the 5870 most games it isant really that noticeable, afew games like Crysis it makes a nice differance, but as a rule I would say no stick with your 5870 wait for the next gen before you upgrade.
