Just about to make this purchase, but would want to check two things;

1 - i'm expecting quite a performance increase, but was curious if similar outputs could be achieved by purchasing a second 5870 and crossfiring

2 - there isnt some massive new line of graphics card about to come out i'm not aware of - the 580 has been out for a while now

Thanks

Would prefer to go to a GTX 580 single, with the option to SLI in future. Shame the one i want (EVGA one) is out of stock on OC atm. oh well

I went from 5870 to a 6950 then to 580 I was very happy from doin it, you won't reget and I live my 580.

I play all my games at 1920x1080 all games maxed out, bfc 2 60-100fps and black ops 80+ fps..

its not even so much performance, countless driver issues have made the 5870 my first and last ATI card - only got it as Nvidia hadnt put out their DX11 card at the time

I went from crossfire 5870s to a single 480 a while back and dont regret it, for all I'd heard about the lack of driver issues these days the reality was they were bloody awful, even though performance took a dip it was atrade I was happy to make for stability

Just did this upgrade myself, from a single 5870 to a GTX 580 - depending on the game the performance difference is around 10-25%. Very happy with it tbh, I am sure you will not look back. Just check your PSU connectors so you dont have to dash to a store at the eleventh hour to buy adapters.

I would not be happy with 10%-25% increase on an upgrade to be honest and the 580 is a lot of money to find as a 5870 second hand might net you £100 approx. so £250 for 10-25%, not for me thanks.:)

Each to their own, I game at 2560x1600 and the 5870 just did not cut it at those resolutions.

This is why I upgraded from a 5870 to a 580. At this resolution the 5870 is brought it's knee's in some games. I don't see any upgrades for quiet a while with the peformance on tap so for me it was a good buy.

I've been running 5870 crossfire, but have both listed on ebay now and got a 580 in the recent sale OCuk had.
I found crossfire only beneficial for a few games and the majority of times I had the second card disabled as it had stability problems or graphical anomalies in the other games I played regularly. Plus all the extra power consumed, heat produced and the pita Ati drivers just soured the whole thing for me.
I won't go SLI/Crossfire again, seems pointless to pay twice the money for something that only works some of the time.
