5870 upgrade to 7970-7950

But which one of the two cards is the better buy in the long term. I know both cards are available with 3 gig of ram. As I only have a 650 watt psu I wouldn't be xfiring in the future.

Put very bluntly. I like it. Spot on.

a 7950 no matter how hard you push it, switch it, clock it or try is not going to be as good as a pushed 7970.

If you don't want to push it OP (and you sound like a sensible guy to me) then get the 7970. The 7950 is a wolf in sheep's clothing it seems, but a toothless sheep if you leave it at stock.

If you can afford a 7970 then get a 7970.
 
Ok, thought as much.7970 it is then, will start saving hopefully pricing will change when the green team have something new to offer. £400+ is more than i'd like to pay, £350 - £375 is more realistic.
