Somewhere, in a field in cheshire... alright!
Hello

Recently got a 5870 and since I've had it I get random crashes in most if not all games. When it occurs the image on screen at that time becomes checkered and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of game. I get a message from the tray saying the driver has stopped responding but has recovered. This has happened in Dirt 2, Crysis, Batman Arkham Asylum and one or two others. Is this a driver issue or is it a problem with the card? Any info is much appreciated.

Is it a pre-overclocked card?, as these seem to often have stability problems according to a fair few user reviews. Keep an eye on the temps and if that dosnt help you could knock 25Mhz of the core and Memory clocks to see if that improves things.
Is your PSU up to spec?

PSU is a Corsair 620w. It is a pre overclocked card so I'll reduce it as you suggested and see what happens. The idle temp is only 33 oC with the fan at 50%.
