5870 x2...Does size matter?

Hi,

im sorry i gave people a heart attack last time i posted. I want to get the 5870 x2 when released (anyone have an ETA). I have the antec900 case but will i need to get a bigger case to fit the card? If so which one? Im thinking of getting the Antec 1200 but the case is HUGE. Any ideas and what length is the x2??
 
There is no ETA on the 5970 as there is an NDA in place. The Antec 900 is unlikely to be large enough imo, you should allow for at least 12" of length on the GPU.
 
anyones guess atm but 1 hardware review site estmated it at 12″-12.5 inches
long.

i doubt it will fit in the 900 i barely got my gtx 280 in there! 1200 though it has too lol!

1 thing id like to know is will it be as fast as 2 5870s in crossfire (1 x16 pci express slot rather than 2 x16 being the only drawback) or will the 5870x2 be slightly downclocked?

Whether or not it will fit should depend on whether you have both HDD cages in. If you have less than 3 HDDs, and put them all in the bottom rack, there shouldn't be a problem with the 900.

This, plus the fact the 900 and the 1200 are the same length anyway (if not, no more than a 1cm in it).
 
I heard Rumours that Antec are currently developing a new case called the 'Limousine Deluxe' ;) Purely cause its soooooooo long.

ive got an antec 900 and that card looks longer than my entire case to be honest!
 
Surely gpus can't keep getting longer and longer, can they?

I have a TJ07 and even I'm worried! :D

I have HDD Drive bay so it will be tight.

yes and no, the top end gpu's will simply get as long as some of the bigger cases get, at which point they'll start increasing layers, its cheaper to make a longer 6 layer pcb card, than a shorter 8 layer card.

I would think the next cards move up to 384bit bus will be similar length but more expensive pcb/routing, then the same for the move to 512mbit which might not be for a long time.

A lot of the power circuitry is able to be used for both cores, so not everything is doubled.

Thing is the X2 doesn't actually sell many cards, they'll sell 1000x as many 5870's as 5870x2's, and frankly most people that buy an X2 will have a case that can fit it anyway, or at least, be more willing to get a bigger case.
But then, so many people have the free slots these days, 2x 5870's, or even 2x5850's are easier to fit for most people.

Even with a HDD bay, the TJ07 could have a 15"/38CM graphics card in it no problem.

11.5" 5870X2 will have a lot more room left at the end.
