5870 Xfire Vs 6970

Well it finally came my new 6970. Let me say i was full of dread after reading all the reviews thinkning i wasted £279 Long story short although not an upgrade as such im ahppy and keeping my card onwards!

Ok only done a quick bench at stock on both cards to give an idea, i would rather play some games then bench all night

Im not one to defend a purchase if its crap i will admit without moments thought but im really happy when you take in:

£279 at launch vs £650 5870 xfire at launch
Xfire running best drivers Vs 6970 with crappy ones for now

Ill update the thread later

p.s noise and temps are worse then 5870's

That's not a bad result mate, but the 6970 is in 570 territory. Would be interesting to see it vs a 570.

That's an interesting result, how is it going back from xfire to single card?? Obviously heaven is tessellation based, so I'm wondering how this compares with more shader based games/benchmarks?

Wll just had a 30 min on each WOW,BFBC2,Killing Foor.

If im honest without fraps running i didt notice anything at all different.

Wow fps went from average of 75fps on ultra to 120+fps I played in windowed mode so xfire was off.

Nice to be on single card, although the 6970 runs HOTTER then a 5870 by approx 8c on game load

Are you planning on sticking with the single card now or perhaps adding another 6970 at a later date??

Looking at your min frames on the heaven bench for the crossfire 5870's it looks very low. I have crossfire 5870's and i get 24.2fps. :confused:

That was just a quick test I did, I wasn't trying for good results either, things were running in the background etc...

If you added another 6970 it would cost you a total of £558 & thats cheaper than the price you paid on the launch of the 5870 by £92 so with taking your upgrade options into account I dont think your figures look so bad at all

No more xfire for me single card will do just fine, mind you these are far hotter then 5870's 2 hr on wow 86c with 38% fan.....anything over 45% fan takes the pee IMO, so wile a faster card it does run hotter

The first 5870 i had at launch cost me: £287.49 including delivery.

Starting to have second thoughts 90c in DOW2 stock settings and at 45% sounding louder then usual, strating to think about the summer temps...do we know what max gpu temp is on these?

cool fps.. im lookin 2 update my GPU an looking 4 suggestions im only intested in AMD cards.. want it as high end gaming for 3d etc.. was thinking 6970 or wait for 6990?

I was thinking of getting a 6950 (well 6950CF), but the 6950 doesn't seem that much better than a 5870 (that I have). So then thought about a 6970 with the intention of adding a 6970 later, but I've heard a few bad things about the coolers. High temps and loud fans

Now I'm tempted to go for the Nvidia 570s but not sure if those are any cooler or quieter really.
And putting a 6970 in XFire or 570 in SLI isn't going to help the temps of at least one of the cards is it!

Maybe I should just get another 5870, but that seems boring as I've had one of the3m for ages (i.e. 1 year), wanted something new. Damn you AMD!

The 6970 under 45% fan is nice over that and it sounds like a hoover, the 6970 is hotter and louder then 5870 xfire. My small office room temp is 23c after 3 hrs gaming no house heating on with 5870xfire changing to the 6970 looked at the wall temp 25.4c

In games won't this be a massive downgrade in terms of raw performance? You've gone from 5870CF to 6970 right?

yes m8, tbh if any thing things a a bit smoother, a 3rd party cooler when there out and all should be well. Im playing more on the xbox kinect with son now so thought i would get latest gpu now sell my xfire and prob have enough cash left to pay off the 6970 and some milk buttons for the little un

santa's bringing me a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X for xmas so was kinda my last upgrade so needed a rig to see me through the next 2-3 years games
