58XX pricing rumour :-(

For all we know they could be offering the 5850, this image has been discussed in the other thread.

I do think it's more likely to be 5870 though.

Though it does state on the power color site that it is a high-end card, and as we know the 5870 will be the high end until the X2 comes about.

5850 & 5870 are both Cypress, given the usual promo marketing spin it could mean either as high end. Hardly definitive.

Personally I think Theo is wrong with $399 for a 5870, just going on the last release prices and where it sets the alleged £599 5870X2.

So wait, in that article the caption on that picture says 'rotated like R600, only bigger'. And, well, R600 was fairly huge compared to RV770 - being 420mm^2, compared to 256mm^2 on RV770. Since with the jump from 55nm to 40nm you can get about 90% more transistors in the same die area (so that's about 1833 million transistors right there), and then you can get another roughly 60% on top from the die size increase from 256mm^2 to 420mm^2, we're looking at a chip with almost 3 billion transistors (or possibly more!) if they're right.

That, quite frankly, is insane.
