Just a quicky - noticed that my refresh rate is at 59hz (see spec in sig). I have the option of 59 or 60 and was just wondering which i should be choosing? Thanks.

I'd say use the highest Hz you can on a LCD monitor.

I'm using 75Hz, so IIRC it'll only start ripping when my FPS go over 75 rather than 60.

Craig.

Ripping can occur at any refresh rate or FPS. Basically its where the frame being drawn changes as the screen refreshes. The only way to eliminate it fully is by using v-sync.

Oh, I thought ripping was when the games FPS goes over the Hz of the screen

Ripping occurs at any frame rate that is not a factor or multiple of your refresh rate. Generally I find it more problematic at frame rates over my refresh rate (75hz) and I also find it to be more noticeable on certain games than others, e.g. Doom 3 engine games have it really bad, whilst in something like BF2, it is barely noticeable.

Also about refresh rates, it is true that LCDs don't suffer from flickering, but having lower refresh rates does still have an effect. For example try opening windows explorer and moving the window around rapidly, in circles. Do this whilst at 60hz and then try again at 75hz. You'll notice that at 75hz, the movement is smoother.

With nvidia i am runnign 1360x768 at 59hz with custom setting but when i had my ati card in, it was running at 60 hz, i can run at 75hz but res drops down to 10 by 7 on my hd tv.

As said it should be 60HZ... I would guess it's an American/Microsoft thing that we have had to adopt

On the TV side it's not much good except for Ntsc playpack (around 2x ntsc framerates) Not divisable by PAL and Film rates hence playback "stutter". Up and comming 120HZ TV's should handle all formats nicely, but I am scepitcal they will really be refreshing the Tv panel at 120HZ , I suspect some "jiggery Pokerery" ;)
