I managed to get a 5900x just above retail price and a 5950x for retail price and I’m now in a dilemma of which one to keep and which one to sell, anyone care to chip in on which I should keep and which I should sell on? I’m leaning toward the 5950x as it should have the 2 better dies where as I read the 5900x is a chip will slightly worse dies

It depends on what you'll use it for. If it's just the usual PC use and gaming, then 5900X is more than enough, possibly even a 5800X would be fine. If you do work loads that benefit from the extra cores, then go for the 5950X.

As above depends what you're going to be doing on your pc, for gaming there's not much point going for the 5950x unless you want it for bragging rights
I had a 9900k so didn’t really need to upgrade in the first place TBH

5900x all the way unless you need the extra cores for serious workstation use. 5900x will take care of gaming and streaming no problem and will likely run cooler than 5950x which would be a bonus. Plus it's cheaper...

There's zero sense in using 5950x in a gaming rig...

IMO Sell the 5900X, keep the 5950X.

It's looking extremely unlikely that first gen AM5 CPUs will work in AM4 motherboards* which means the 5950X will be the best CPU you can ever get for your board. You may save a little bit of cash by keeping the 5900X but it means that you will only end up swapping in a used 5950X down the line or upgrading the motherboard/CPU (and RAM) sooner than you would have too had you stuck with the 5950X, not worth the hassle IMO.

*Historically speaking it was the norm prior to AM4 for AMD CPU/motherboard sockets to maintain one gen of compatibility for early/late models.

If you decide to sell the 5950x I would be interested in it. I have a wanted thread in the MM for a 5950x. I was sold one in that thread but the person has come back saying they have issues getting the CPU now. I even canceled my preorder at a competitor because I was told it was with DPD and on the way. So I'm not a happy bunny at the moment as you can imagine considering I was around 15th spot last I checked on the preorder :(.

Ah that sucks

I hope you left a trust update on him. I can see the wanted thread.

For your sake, in future do not deal with people who says they got a pre-order coming. Make sure he has the part in hand and take photo evidence of it especially for parts that are scarce.

anyway that bloke has been selling lots of GPU on MM as well. Not entirely sure how he s getting these. Makes me very suspicious of his activities.

Well he said he has the tracking details for it with DPD and was due today or monday.. What else can I say. His choice who to sell it to in the end, I just feel he got a better offer elsewhere and screwed me over, from on the way with DPD to a problem getting the CPU is just strange to me too. Only reason I did cancel was because I have seen him sell a lot of stuff recently and people getting their stuff.

I'm left now with either going into the high street store to buy a 3950x again... as I sold a brand new one yesterday too to a work mate. It's just a total nightmare this build from day one.

From getting all the parts to ending up with parts that were not going to work thanks to nvidia only supplying 4 slot NVlink. So far sold brand new not even opened :- 3950x, asrock 570 Taichi, corsair hxi 1200. Worst part still have a brand new Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Pure Black CPU Cooler to sell on the MM(covers first pcie slot :( so had to buy again the Noctua NH-D15S Chromax Pure Black that works on this board without covering the pcie slot) because the new motherboard I had to buy the MSI godlike is only AM4 board that allows 4 slot NVlink.

I have thrown away so much money on this build as it never ends right or some headache caused by retailers or people promising stuff.

So all the loss in new items sold and then to add more insult paying £710 for a motherboard (just to be able to use my 2 x 3090 in SLI with the 3950x I had ..) then I sold my new 3950X because the person selling me a 5950x fell threw and now have to go buy a new 3950x lol just to add more to my loss. I sold the 3950x for £550 and I paid £650 for it and tomorrow will have to go pay £650 again.... :( so I can finally get my pc up and running (main rig) as I sold my other pc parts now and all boxed up to send to the people tomorrow. Now stuck on a phone and laptop to do work that needs a desktop pc with a cuda graphics card.

@Purgatory there are going to be some 5950x availability near the end of month so it should help you there.

I am pretty sure that guy is a scalper or he s doing some kind of scamming down the line. I am surprised that mod has not shut his GPU sake thread down.

this is typical MO, sell a few card (he originally only had 3 cards for sale, now he s listed over 20). And get some feedback so people believe in him and wham, 20 x £1000 cards. He can disappear overnight and be a very happy boy.

OP, the question depends on your use case. The 5950 is only worth the difference if it makes you more money or you are CPU limited.

Anything else... put the extra money into the next upgrade budget.
