I have a 5900x which I bought for CPD work but now only use it for gaming. For a while I had it in 6 core mode as I forgot to restore both CCDs after doing some testing. I didn't notice any difference.

I can get a 5700x3d for £140. It will be paired with 32GB of 3200Mhz DDR4 and RTX 3080.

My 5900x will go to a friend as an upgrade over the 3600 as he does a lot of heavily multitasking (he has offered to pay the same £140).

That 3600 might even go to his friend with a 2600 - which might end up in a second PC reducing my friends need for an upgrade...

Anyway, is this a good idea for all involved?

It depends on what you play to a degree, but certainly it's an upgrade for gaming. I moved from a 5800X to a 5800X3D last year and it provided a massive boost to my minimum framerate in my main game (World of Warcraft). I thought I might move to AM5 some time this year, but I feel absolutely zero compulsion to now. I think an X3D-equipped AM4 setup will comfortably last until AM6 rolls around at this stage.

I have the 3600 currently and considering going for 5700x3D as its so cheap relative to the 5800x3D.

But not sure whether to wait out a bit longer and get the 5800x3D when it hopefully comes down more in price.

I think if your friend is going to give you the £140 for your CPU then its a free upgrade for you basically! Especially for gaming.

Go for the 5700X3D, more money in the bag and you’re only losing out on a tiny bit of performance.

I've just replaced me 5600X with a 5700X3D. A huge bargain for the price at them moment.

I don't think the limiting factor will be the CPU when paired with a 4070ti with a 3440x1440 monitor limited to 120 with gsync.

You probably could just spend some time and hard overclock the 5900x and tune your ram if it's any good and get similar performance

5700x3d arrived from its long journey west, just need to install it but it looks mint and the package is still sealed.

My overclocking and tweaking days are over, particularly with these new boosting cpus. Plus I am more drawn to efficiency these days.

Can hardly believe these £140 5700X3D deals are real from the East :p

I paid over £200 for one from a UK retailer new, upgrading from a 5700X which I sold second hand for about £135 IIRC.

Still money well spent and I have no regrets. Sure, your frame rate won't go through the roof, but having an X3D will go a long way to smoothing out a lot of the nasty choke points that drop FPS in CPU limited scenarios.

The 5700X3D certainly seems to run cooler than the 5800X3D for gaming, but it'll still go thermonuclear in 100% utilization non-gaming scenarios from what I've seen.

I also have rather slow DDR4 RAM, and had FOMO that I was missing out not having an AM4 X3D. Now I know I've essentially maxed this platform CPU-wise, I'm much happier as a result. Even if I see an FPS drop to 50 (almost never now), I'm no longer wondering if this could've been avoided if only I had an X3D.

I had PBO2 options in the bios with my MSI board. "kombo strike" level two is working well for me, which I guess is -20 on all cores. level 3 was a bit too much and caused instability with the new cinebench.

65*C max under a D15 so far. Happy with that.

Did you get hit by any customs charges?
My order was under £135 so I paid VAT at checkout and have had no contact about paying any import or customs charges.

Installed in my overpowering Gigabyte board so need to manually set the power so 75% of what it should be

Hope you've not got the CPU equivalent of this:
