Got a broken laptop off ebay and have been doing it up. Decided to move to something a bit beefier than my last machine and then replace my desktop.

This is the motherboard after I stripped down the system (had to inspect everything for damage)

Nvidia Geforce 250m 1024mb GDDR3
Kingston SSDnow 40GB (intel G2) SSD + External Sata 250GB HDD.

Build should be finished with the 240m on Tuesday. I'll grab the 250m either Wednesday or next week.

The top cover is going to be another 2 weeks as its a special part, the current one is ok for now however.

wow where did you manage to get the 250m from? I saw you pick up the 240 from NBR as I was considering it :)

Have you managed to get an LCD yet? that is the most difficult unless you specifically get one for that model as the interfaces are often different. Would be good if you could get a decent 1080p panel in there as the stock acer is pretty poor

I'm just sorting the finances to be able to get the 250m atm (see my for sale thread) but it's from mxm-upgrade.com

The panel is not bad (I grabbed a replacement off ebay).

I don't need 1080p on the move and I have a 1080p desktop display to plug it into.

If I decided to keep the 250m would you be interested in the 240m?

I'd pass it on for what I got it for, it is half the price of the 250m.

Possibly, pop me an email through trust when you put it up in MM :)

Before you buy the 250m make sure you stress the 240m and check your temps. remember that the 250m will run a bit hotter so if its running the 240m at 70c+ then you may have problems with the 250m.

Ok so after a while of using the GTS250M I have a feel for it.

It's very quick for the size of machine it will fit.

It does run a bit hot with the extreme edition. I get safety clocks for apps that are balanced and so make the GPU AND CPU work hard at the same time. I have found an HD4670 cooler for the notebook and HD4670 GDDR3 card.

The 4670 when OCed will be similar to the GTS250M. It will still support the graphics switching and along with the cooler it costs the same. (the agreement with the shop was I would write a review and keep full return rights).

LCD - £70
Top cover - £80
GTS250M - 250 euros
GT240M - £100
Core 2 extreme - £200
HD 4670 - 185 euros
HD 4670 cooler - 50 euros
Ram - £67 (bought here last year, fat chance of pulling that off now though)

wow that 250GTS is pretty expensive, what screen res will it be running as maybe the 240 would be good enough.

1366x768, however I like to hook it up to a 1080p monitor when I am at home.

Getting the 4670 now and will get a faster one if it turns up from either camp.

What do I expect to have in or what do I expect to have spent?

I expect to have in:

Intel core 2 extreme x9100 3.066ghz @ 3.2ghz
4GB Kingston DDR3 PC8500 @ 1066mhz 5-5-4-12
HD 4670 1GB GDDR3 675/800 @ 750/1000 (hopefully)
40GB Kinston SSD (Intel G2 based)
250GB 5400RPM Seagate momentus
External slot loading DVD-RW

You can figure out the cost from above.

sorry, was a little vague,. But your list answers my question though.
Was just interested where you was heading with the build to be a finished unit.
Thanks for info.

The project continues.

I have gone with the hd4670 and improved cooler. Its running at 760/1020 and my x9100 is @ 3.33ghz.

At the moment i am adding in the second lvds channel to my lcd cable so i can run a 1080p panel.

Also the new nvidia gt 4xxm are coming out in mxm-a so i will keep an eye out.

nice work mate.

have you found it difficult sourcing the correct lcd cable for the 1080p screen?
I wish they were all made the same so it was easier to swap panels
