I was planning on ordering a 5960x but saw the news about skylake coming in a few months. This processor will complement 2 titan x's. Performance is all I am fussed for, I don't care which is better value. It will only be for gaming. I plan on using a custom water loop.

5820k is looking like the sweetspot, personally i wouldnt go Z97 now as its soon to be an end of line platform. Though either the 4790k or 5820k will be more than enough for dual sli. You'd only need the 5960 if running more than two gpu's.

Plenty of people still use a 2500k for gaming, of course this is a slightly different situation with Titan X SLI, but I think you should be fine assuming you have overclocked the CPU?

On a side note am I going to see much improvement over my 2600k?

Probably not, i've seen a lot of people ask about upgrading from a 2600k across a few tech forums and most seem of the opinion the small bump isn't worth the cost.

intel's market segmentation of mainstream/hepc is a pernicious device...i hope they get royally trounced by a competitor so mainstream has to jump......customers on the HEPC track might be left out in the cold mind you.

to the op, if money is no object..go 5960 now and switch later in the 0.0001% chance...skylake mainstream is allowed to outshine the HEPC platform because amd release something good..

If you are worried about PCI-E lanes then a 5930k would be fine as well. If you have money to blow though, get the 5960X like me haha
