Does anyone else here have either 5970's crossfire or a 5970+5870. If so how are you cooling your cards? DO you have after sale coolers or have you rigged up some fancy airflow fans to pump air into certain parts of the cards?

Stock for me also, the 5970 reached 80c whilst gaming and the 5870 about 68c.

The 5970 idles @ 50c after 5 minutes of gaming.

Are your cards sitting next to each other? If so what sort of temps are they running at?

I have an Asus P6TD mobo. and the gap between them is about 1.5".

I also have a Coolermaster Cosmos case with a fan already built in at the bottom blowing air into the GFX cards air intakes. I also have a customised side window on the case with an extra 120mm fan blowing air across the cards.

My prob is I dont have any gap between the cards :(

I have the Antec 1200 case and because the side fan holder is stupidly angled I cannot put a fan there as it hits my cpu heatsink. I suppose I might be able to mod ( smash bits off ) a fan to get it in.

Am I correct in thinking that the air intake for the cards is actually the fan on the side of the cards and not the batmobile slots at the end of the card?

No it's the batmobile slots that are the intakes, so I dont think it would be an issue with their being no gap mate. I am sure others may have no gaps either with Gigabyte motherboards?

Thats cool. What I think I will try is add an aditional fan inside my hdd case. The 1200 has 3 120mm fans on the front and because my ssd's are position in the top of teh case I have emtpy hdd cages.. Its a big gap between the front fans and the cards intakes so I might see if I can do a mod to add a second 120mm fan on the other end of the hdd cage right next to the cards intakes.. This should give extra umpth for the air coming in to push it into teh vid cards :)

Why not get the other card in place before you start modding the case and see what the temps. are I am sure you will be suprised as the cooling on the GFX cards are quite good and the fans will adjust accordingly when things get toasty.

If you're not happy then start modding the case, that's waht I would do. :)

Good luck.

A few sites have shown those batnostrils are just for show and intake squat. I found when I was running 2 5870's squashed up beside each other on a rampage extreme II, the top one always ran 10 degrees hotter idle compared to the bottom one as the fan intake was blocked. And up to 15 degrees under load. It didn't overheat or anything, but with 5970's I'd be careful.

Yes I find my 5970 ( on top ) runs hotter with the 5870 under it. Running by itself it goes to 75-80 under load. When the 5870 was positioned under it it hit almost 90.

At the moment I am running 5970 alone but if these new drivers have solved the eyefinity + crossfireX I will be putting the 5870 back in. I did try inserting a small folded bit of cardboard between the cards to increase the gap slightly and it helped by about 2 deg but its still running hotter than I like.

I will do the mod at some point and let you know what I get.. Will also up pics so you can all see how to easily turn a 100 quid case into a 5 quid trash can ;)

I had that problem with my antec 1200 and purchased a corsair H50.

Lower cpu tempts and it's not in the way anymore.

I ended up sticking my 2nd card into my 3rd pci-e 16x slot which created a gap of nearly 100mm. Luckily I was able to source an extra long crossfire bridge.

I Recieved the long crossfire bridge with my mobo ( Asus Rampage Extreme II ) but unfortunatly I cannot put a double slot card in the 3rd pci-e because of my Antec 1200 case

BTW, your crossfire cards, do you have any problems with eyefinitty?

What fps have you got etc..?

Im considering buying a 5870 to accompany my 5970, or another 5970, i can't decide..
