hi all,

recently i've been having loads of problems with my 5970; can't quite put my finger on when (and indeed what software was installed/updated/removed etc) this happened..

anyway; it seems that when i play a game, it'll load in fine, then after a bit of play time (this varies massively from 0.5s to over a few hours) i get looping sound, all screens go to sleep, msi afterburner shows on my g-15 that the primary gpu is running at 14MHz, -200*C and 100% usage (normally whilst gaming it'll only max up to 99%). i've noticed sometimes as well that the 3 green led's that live under the top plate go out; this isn't consistently every time, but the majority of the time. another note of these 3 led's - when the 5970 was in the top pci-e 16x slot, all 3 would be solid green, but since i've moved it to the lower slot (explained below) the middle of these blinks every second...

a few months ago after rejigging my watercooling, i swapped the 5970 and 5870 around (i run trifire) so the 5870 was above; i literally had 0 serious problems with it in this config, but since i've swapped them over things seem to have degraded.

things i've tried:

different drivers ranging from 11.9's -> 12.1 previews
different CAP's
uninstalling msi ab
uninstalling g-15 software (read on the amd forums it *can* cause issues)
disabled all gfx overclocking
disabled all cpu overclocking
disabled all but 1 monitor

i've taken the 5970 out now, going to have an inspection of the pcb and see if anything is damaged.

if anyone has any tips/solutions, please do tell :) don't think i can live without that beast of a card in my pc :p

cheers!

update:

nothing appears out of sorts on the card, although the thermal paste looked a little dry. i've reapplied some and will put the card back in later and see if that helps.
