You can expect pretty much 3-3.5x the performance, providing the game scales and your CPU doesn't get in the way of things.

Buy one now and it'll be worth £2000 by next xmas the way things are going :D

with the exception of crysis what game is your card struggling to play?
wait until a few dx11 games come out at least imo.

If you need to justify it to yourself, think about it like this; at the moment, that expensive 1000w power supply of yours is going to waste... ;)

Genuine LOL

Im still sitting on a early release 4870 512MB atm.
Currently contemplating a 5870 or possibly 2*4890 or the other option is 2 5770's.

Not sure how well they will perform in my mobo tho as its a P5Q Pro so 8/8 in X-Fire :(

I would expect a 5970 to be an immense upgrade x3+ performance I would expect when its runnign something that scales nicely.

New job, new cash, treat yourself with yer first paycheck :p

And theres your justification lol xD

I went from a 4890 to a 5970. And to be brutally honest, I cannot see any difference. If you are going to do synthetic benchies 24/7 you will see a difference, but who does ?

I play MW2, DEFCON and a few other games, unless it's DX11 you won't see any difference. Especially MW2, I played it with my old 4870 the other day, not a slight bit of difference, the graphics are exactly the same, mind you, it's just a straight port from a crappy console.

So, just to sum up, don't waste your money, your 4890 is a brilliant card that doesn't need to be upgraded for at least 6-8 months.

Personally I'd leave it until the 300 series NVidia come out, a few people reckon (and I agree) that the 5970 will drop in price about that time.

Running Q9650 (4.05) on Asus Pq5-E with 2x 2gb Dominator ram here.

Moved from 260 (little slower than 4890) to a 5870 just before xmas.

Main difference I find is that I can now usually max. out all eye candy which I could not before.

Am running on 24" monitor @1920x1200

Recomended upgrade - tbh- No!

Do I regret upgrading - No :D

Just like you I started a new job a few months back. Fancied treating myself so it was a choice between an iphone or the 5970. Picked the iphone for the simple reason my 4870 in crossfire is playing all my game fine(SF4, MW2, DOW 2) Even Crysis I happy with running at High settings with AA off.
Until there is more dx11 games on the market it would be wasted features not being used yet by myself due to the games. By the time more dx11 are out, either the Nv 300 will be out, the 5970 will be cheaper or there will a revision of the 5970 which be slightly quicker and cheaper anyway than the original 5970.

Not familiar with the board but is it PCI-E 2.0?
If so then don't worry, the difference between 8x and 16x crossfire is ~2%
