I have 2 x 5970 xfire

They are on a gigabyte UD7 MOBO, placed on the pcie x16 slots right next to each other.

The issue is sometimes when I game for a long time my GPU's go up to 85c in temp,

should I be worried?

Out of both cards one of them is always about 10 to 20c hotter all the time ! I know why, basicaly the card that is hotter is right next to my sound card, which is a xfi champion edition, this sound card has a metal case surrounding,

So when the sound card gets hot, it adds heat to the main 5970, there is only 2mm apart, I cant move the sound card to another slot becuase non are free

i thought of the 5970 fan cooler, but this is a no go becuase if i fit this on the the hotter 5970 the this will add width in size so it wont fit ?

What is the safe or normal temperature for a 5970 under full load ?

Also if I move my sound card from one pcie slot to another, do i have to un-install the drivers first ? then pysicaly remove the card and then re-install the drivers ?

Any advice appeciated.

Normal under load, mine used to go up to 90c. Took the card apart, cleaned it out and re-applied new TIM and it doesn't go above 80c now.

Hi thanks

What do you mean by "re-applied new TIM "

Maybe I could do what you have done, ?

Hi hobib,

I took the card apart, cleaned all the dust out then replaced the thermal pads on the VRAM and the thermal paste (TIM) and put everything back together again. If you know what you're doing then feel free to have a go but please don't hold me responsible if anything breaks! :p

As for the sound card, no you wouldn't.

cool, I dont think I would attempt to open up the gpu incase i do anything wrong !

Also if someone has 5970 xfire gpu,s and they decided to remove one card and leave it as a single set up, do i just simply remove the 2nd 5970 graphics card or do I have to do anything software related 1st i.e removing drivers ect ?

Could I just switch off the pc pull out the 2nd card and then restart ?

thanks for all the help guys:)
