The chances of multi-GPU such as Crossfire (and even SLI, but at a less probability) running into issue such as microstuttering or poor performance is a bit like playing russian roulette...if it works fine it's great, if it doesn't it can be a pain in the @ss, kind of a hit or miss. Seen a few members moved from their problematic CF5870 and 5970 to GTX480, and they were much happier with that.

Single GPU will be always be better in terms of reliability, so either get a GTX480 now, or wait and see the 6870 that's gonna be out before the end of the year.

I have a 5970 and had had no micro-stutter and no performance issues (in the games I have). I think its funny that people dont mind multi-core CPU's but wouldn't have crossfire or SLI LOL.

Emm multicore CPUs dont cause microstutter and dont have drivers issues with many games unlike SLI and Xfire:confused:

I ran some tests on my setup and the difference in perceived smoothness was obvious to me ... maybe some folk are more sensitive to microstutter. I was amazed at how smooth everything was on my 5870 compared to 5870+5970 and the 5970 alone ... I recall crysis at 30 fps or therabouts on the 5870 appearing much smoother and slick than even the 5970 @ 50 fps .. I recall a similar effect for the Unigine benchmark.

If possible try multigpu first as sometimes it really does bug me!! For me something with performance akin to the 5970 is necessary for eyefinity (which I enjoy) and for the best eye candy on a single screen .. so when a single gpu can deliver that I'll look to ditch the 5970 (Have just sold the 5870 as that really was not necessary!).

From what I read Quadfire don't scale too well and often perform the same, if not worse than tri-fire. Could be the reason why Phoenixdancer want to let go one of his ;)

I was claiming the same thing not so long ago but Final8ty or Flanno corrected me on that. They scale pretty well with the recent drivers.

How is quadfire? I was thinking about getting another 5970 LOL.

I have sold m y 5970 with waterblock and down sized my eyefinity back to 1 5870 and 1 screen. with the money i made from selling stuff including my laptop i have gone to a imac 27 i5 quad. was sick of eyefinity hurt my eyes and tbh games play much better on 1 5870 on a 24 inch screen . no problems @ all . im happy now with what i got. dont think ill go multi gpu ever again.

Its ok on a single monitor.

Ramp up to eyefinity resolutions and its Stutter here and stutter there.

benchmarks get below what you want.... Uses to much power...

Bah

Dont recomend it.
but Tri-Fire... I recomend that!

they do Scale VERY WELL.... But with microstutter and driver issues you dotn see the scaleing as much as you would want over the problems. Single monitor on the other hand is all peachy
