5970 problems

System :

i7 920 @ 4ghz | Asus Rampage 2 Extreme | Corsair XMS3 6gb | 4xOCZ Vertex 30gb | 1000watt Zalman Heatpipe cooled | Saphire 5970 | Saphire 5870

I added the 5970 to my system in last couple of days and I have had nothing but problems. When I first put the 5970 & 5870 together I ran Heaven Benchmark and got an amazing rsult of 2553 but since then I cant get anything to run right.

I have tried all drivers. 10.3, 10.2, 10.1 which I keep getting BSOD's when running heaven demo now. I get stupid frame rates of like 10fps in need for speed shift when running in eyefinity & crossfireX. I even tried running Shift in 1920x1200 single screen in crossfireX mode and got 40 fps before getting loads of artifacts on screen and lock up.

I can run the 5970 without the 5870 but framerates are lower than what my 5870 is.

I have also tried 9.12 hotfix and can run the heaven demo but no where near the framerate I was getting on my 1st good result.

Does it sound like the 5970 is faulty?

I have considered power supply but the 1000 should handle it. I have tested all drivers but apart from 9.12 hotfix which runs ( not as expected ) I get constant crashes on different games.

Any input on people which 5970 & 5870 crossfireX as in which drivers they are using.. Power Supplies and some basic benchmarks I should be aiming for would be appriciated.

Thanks

Forget CrossfireX with Eyefinity for now it will bring everything to slide show territory ... that's an all drivers inc 10.3 preview I am using now! The 5970 is fine in Eyefinity but add in the 5870 and it's pants, some more work for ATI to finish off there ... seems like it is ok for 2 gpus

Is Catalyst AI enabled? Are you overclocking - if not and crossfire aint functioning then a 5970 will be slower than a 5870!

Use GPUz or MSI Afterburner to check temps & % GPU utilisation ... you'll soon know what looks odd!

Blacninja sorry to hijack this thread mate, I know you have a 5970 + a 5870 in crossfire have you been playing BFBC2? Because i'm about to recieve my 5870 and was wondering what performance increase I would see in this game if I added it to to 5970.

Thanks.

Well I have removed the 5870 and done some more testing. I have found something that I have not read about yet and wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

If I run things in windowed mode all is fine but as soon as I run something in fullscreen it crashes my system. I have tested this with heaven demo, furmark and a few games. BFBC2 for example will run in fullscreen but it will run so slow its unreal. As soon as I swap to windowed mode it seems ok.

And that BFBC2 running really slow, that is just with your 5970? I am on 10.2's and I just have a 5970. In games, this card is performing exceptionally well. BFBC2 I get 80-140 FPS on highest settings. In fullscreen mode. So i guess something is wrong with your card.

Maybe try, as said above, to use GPUz and see what's going on whilst you in a game?

Problem is I cannot seem to run anything in fullscreen mode as it crashes. I have just recieved an RMA number so going to send it back. I am going to give it all one last test tonight though I am goin got remove everything else from the machine ( sound cards etc etc ) and do a complete windows reinstall ( 3rd time since friday :)

i found i got BSoD's all the time when i had all 3 gpu's working together. you need to disable crossfireX, then go into regedit and change all of the ULPS flags to 0

Go to registry and disable Ulps:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

and change "EnableUlps" to 0 under the 0000 and 0001 or 0003 keys.

So you are running a 5970 & a 5870 and also had crashes like I explaine4d I was getting?

And changing the ULPS to 0 stopped this?

If I am correct is the ulps flag to control if the second gpu goes into idle mode on the 5970?

Well last night I did some more testing.

Removed all other devices that I could do with out. I reinstalled windows so I knew I had a clean install. No windows updater so I know windows was not trying to install its drivers for card. Installed drivers 10.2 from ati site. INstalled them. Set AI to off and ran heaven demo. It worked. Set AI to on to make sure both gpu's are used and as soon as the heaven demo loaded and about to start the system crashed.

I tried all the reg tweeks mentioned also and no good. So basically this card is being picked up by couriers to return to OC.

I dont believe this. Just stuck the new 5970 replacement in my machine and guess what.. Same **** I was having with the previous one.

£550 for a piece of junk.

Well that last post was a bit harsh but was written while annoyed at the 2nd card crashing also :(

Anyway I have made a discovery of whats causing my problems and was wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

Basically if I run a full screen app ( game / bench mark ) while I have my 5970 in crossfire I get a BSOD. BUT this only happens when I have my 3rd monitor connected via dport. If I unplug the dport monitor everything runs fine.

My monitors dont actually have dport so I am using a dvi to dport adapter ( the sapphire one ). On top of this because the sapphire 5970 has teh mini dport socket I have to use the mini dport to dport adapter which came with my card. So in short.... GFX card - > mini dport to dport adapter - > dport to dvi adapter ( with usb power ) -> dvi on monitor.

Has anyone else come accross this problem or read anything up on it with any solutions?

Thanks

Hi Mr Elf

I got my 5970 last week, I'm using the Sapphire adapter too - I can't remember which one of my monitors its linked to but I've had no problems. I'll have a look when I'm home and see which it is.

I'm running things in fullscreen no problems.

Regards
Fred

Yeah tried everything at stock. Even tried running me 5970 & 5870 in crossfire with 5870 being master card and using the normal dport on it. but matters not what I do when ever I run things in full screen on a single monitor with crossfire enabled and dport monitor attached i get bsod :(

Maybe a bad dport lead.. Might rma that
