So anand looked into this further and it seems some vrms's are cooled better than others on the card, and the hotter ones can hit 120 degrees in furmark which causes throttling. AMD say furmark is a power virus but when anand ran crysis, the vrms hit 95 degrees. Not much headroom there. Also fan can hit 70db.

Anyone experienced any of this overheating / throttling ?

not regarding the overheating but are the fans on the 5970 really that loud?

i struggle to understand it as my 5870 idles @ 21%/ 32ºc and i can't hear it.
Whilst gaming it gets to roughly 65/70ºc @ 27% fan and still i can't hear it.

i can understand these being slightly warmer but the temps reported (if represent real world) are worrying

Yes I have, one GPU throttled down to 550 core clock and then the system locked up.

I would not overclock this card using the stock cooler, it is almost overwhelmed by moderate overclocks.

It needs a water block.

Because ati fan control has always been pants. Are you sure it's only 70 degrees at 27%. What are you using to monitor it ? Wait till it gets to 80 plus and the fan suddenly screams. That would be typical of Crysis. Much better to have a fan speed profile using MSI Afterburner in my opinion.
