Hmm having just ordered a 6970 in my new spinosaur rig - i was looking at benchmarks and noticed the 6970 gets pwnd compared to the 5970 - I assumed the 6970 was the best ATi had to offer - been out the game too long - anyone care to explain?? :D

The 5970 is a dual-gpu card. This essentially means that the ATI 5970 houses two 5850 chips on a single card.

Therefore, you are comparing a crossfired card - the 5970 - with a single GPU card.

You can get an idea on how two 5850's in xFire compares to a single 5970. Check out the AnandTech Bench

6990 is the successor of 5970. AMD has learnt the bad naming scheme from nvidia to maximise confusion among customers for profit.

I'd say if you have a mobo with reasonable pcie spacing then 2 x 6970 is definitely better than a 6990 (because of much less noise).
