:DI have had my 5970 xfire for about 8 months now,

So I was on the ATI CCC control panel, on the AMD overdrive bit I saw that under default settings the cards as below:

GPU clock settings: currently 725 MHz
Memory clock settings: currently 1000MHz

Im sure anyone else with 5970/s have the above settings,

So I thought if I increase the speeds i would get better and faster graphics to as below:

GPU clock settings: now 850 MHz
Memory clock settings: now 1250MHz

I thought this was a MINOR increase, so I started Dirt3 and within 5 seconds of gameplay the graphics went all black and all could could hear was the sound, I could still play, but with no visual graphics,

So I quicky reset the cards at default settings, WTF did I do wrong ? I thought the 5970s are good for overclocking ! in this was a very minor increase ! IMO, has anyone else experienced what I have ?

Are you serious?!!! That's a massive increase lol. I bump up by maybe 5Mhz at a time and test for stability, adjusting voltage accordingly.

There's like GUIDES on the internet about this, try reading one or two :p :p!!

LOL at the 25% increase in memory speed in one go!:D

Is adding 25% to anything a minor increase in your book?

As stated read some guides and go S L O W L Y!;)

I have a XFX 5970 and this is what I have my overclock set to using MSI Afterburner:

Voltage - 1200
Core Clock - 850Mhz
Memory Clock - 1200Mhz

hmm I didn't know that was too much of a increase, Ok I will try lower settings but how do I increase the voltage ? I cant see the option for voltage on the CCC panel ?

Do I need somthing else to increase the voltage ?

Im sure i have a BIos thats 900/1250 @1.172Volts. Can link it if you like?

Also have a 980/1280 bios but you might want to get the fire extinguisher ready if your only on air :)

If you want to overvolt just use the 5970 tool.

I have used this guys Bios before and they work VERY well!. I just flashed to a setting it makes things easy and stable,no 3rd party rubbish messing with your system.

Like said above, you can't just clock a gpu like a cpu lol! You have to take it in much smaller steps such as 5-10Mhz. Increasing both values by even 100mhz is a massive clock. ^^

Is it possible to overclock the 5970 slightly but without messing around with the voltage?

Ive had a look at after burner and its confusing, the voltage does not seem clear i.e theres a guide Ive looked at and it states to increase the voltage to 1.1625V but on after burner it does not let me choose the above amount, there is no 2.5 option like above.

I really don't want to burn my cards but want to try overclocking.

cheers overclockers

You can get a slight OC with the card without overvolting but not to seem funny, you need to read up and learn abit more before you start.

There is also a programme called TRIXX thats as simple s it gets just 3 sliders.
