Sent one of our 5D's to Park Cameras to do a sensor clean. Received a call to say they can't clean it so we asked to have the camera returned (still charged for the service even though they didn't manage to clean the it).

When the camera was returned I put the camera into sensor cleaning mode to see if they had managed to make any improvements. But all I get is Error 99 and cannot get to see the sensor due to the problem. So basically it came back faulty.

Sent it back for them to investigate - they sent it to Canon who said it would cost £400 to repair to which Park Cameras said its not their problem and I would have to pay for it to be repaired.

Where do I stand in this situation? Has anyone else had these sort of issues before?

That's a tough one as they will push the situation on you to prove that it was not either faulty before sending, damaged in the post etc which they will say is not their fault.

Ask them for a copy of the report/work done that they charged you for, (if they charged you for something they should have a written report on what you paid for) and also why could they not clean it?

My wife is in the process of following up with a formal complaint. It can't have been faulty before sending as they managed to attempt a clean. As it is now the camera refuses to go into sensor cleaning mode and Error 99's.

They tried twice to clean the smudge but they said it wasn't shifting.

We had an issue years ago when a customer of ours demanded a camcorder back before we had chance to repair it. They took it to comet/currys for repair and they said we had damaged it.

Do you have the repair docket?
Did the repair agent explain why they couldn't repair it?

In our situation the camera wouldn't rewind but all other functions were ok. when it went into comet/currys they also noted that it wouldn't rewind. however they then sent a report saying that the main chassis was bent meaning no function. And that we must have bent it trying to remove.

(we hadn't had chance to open it but funny how they KNEW how it was wrecked)

So it worked when they had it but NOT on its return.

They're fault then

What causes an error 99? Is it possible they nudged the mirror and have set it off balance?

If the mirror won't go up you can't get to the sensor...could that be the problem?

Quick update for anyone interested:

Park Cameras were quite good in that they offered to pay two thirds of the repair costs (around £450 for shutter mechanism replacement, low pass filter replacement, calibration etc.) leaving me to pay a third.

I thought this was reasonable considering the age of the camera so paid the third and its all fixed :)
