Had this camera and a 24-70 f2.8 lens a week now, first time ive used an SLR so ive spent a lot of time fiddling around finding out how it works. Previously only borrowed my mothers ixus 750 and my old mans Powershot S3. Finally got some acceptable shots to show, any C&C, tips, hints, help and advice would be more than welcome and appreciated. Cheers, Andy

My first shots with 5D!

How come you chose a 5D as your first ever SLR camera?

Good question, Ive been reading up on DSLR's for the past year or so and part of my decision came down to did I want a cropped sensor or full frame and the other issue was I wanted a camera with excellent low light ability, I recently came into some money and decided on the 5D. I couldnt see the point in spending money on say a 400D getting use to it then selling it at a loss to purchase a 5D in a year or so.

The cat sure doesn't look too happy!
Yeah, strange that because she was actually in a really good mood I caught her in the middle of meowing and I agree it appears as though shes ready to attack, you have to forgive her though she is 20 years old!!!

If this is your first SLR I would suggest reading up a lot about what to do with it. And then going out to practice.

photo.net among many other sites has a lot of learning resources.

Form your posted shots, non to me either look completey sharp or you may have just missed points of focus. This might be because you are at too narrow an aperture and your depth of focus is not in the correct place?

My advice is to be very critiacl over your own work, compare it to other published stuff and see what it is you think you might be missing/lacking, then tyr again. You have some fantastic equipment top practice with just keep using it.

you are right the focus especially on the cat is way off, that was the first time i'd used the aiservo, also correct on the narrow aperture, I need to use a deeper depth of field, unfortunately I have anatomy/physiology and radiation physics exams next week so am spending too much time studying at the mo! I will just have to practice when work/study allows me to :(

cheers for the advice

Good choice on the 5D! :D

All I can say is do a LOT of reading! Stick it in Av mode first and use the top wheel to adjust the aperture and just experiment with it. It's a nice starting point, great choice of lens too. :)

cheers mint, I did exactly what you suggested and stuck it in Av mode ;)

That's the best part of photography. Learning! There isn't a day that goes by that I don't read about a technique or an editing process that I haven't seen before. Admittedly I don't have the time to spend every night looking at my favourite hobby, but it's still great fun finding new ways to take shot, and new concepts :)

You'll probably find that the competitions that most photography forums have, will help you immensely, even if you don't enter them. Learning how to get the effects others have, or what your idea for the compo is, and making it happen is a good way to learn.

It also can drive you nuts :D

I'm the othe way round,

I have a photo asignment due in, I have to get 8-10 pics in ( I have about 4 that work, but they need to be themed so I may need a reshoot) plus a years workbook written up for my photo class by a week monday. This weekend I have an inlaws 70th, next week the other half is in norway, and Work also seem to think that they deserve some time and effort for the money they pay me.

Oh, and I have to take, develop and print my pics on traditional B+W...
