Well I threatened, I had second thoughts, and reviewed and tested.... and now I have bought !!!!.......... 5D is in my hands !!!
So after much lens deliberation and reading here etc..... I ended up with the following on my trip to the high street store !!
5D with 24-105 L USM IS Lens
Sigma 170-500 APO DG
Own Brand 300AFDC Flash (Cheap to get me going)
Hoya 77mm Skylight Filter - Free !
Sensor cleaning kit (To clean up old D70 before sale) - Free !
For the grand Total of £2499...
Had a play with the 17-40L .... Nice lens, was very tempted, but 17mm to 24mm is not a huge jump in angle, plus my plan was always to use the Zeiss 18mm lens I have with an adapter... so temptation was resisted....
Would have had a 70-300 IS USM, but they have 700 on order, 300 back orders, and were unable to locate one for me to try/buy on the day.
The 75-300 USM, felt cheap, and slow compared to all the other lens, so wasn't tempted to compromise !
Had a play with the 100-400 L, as a play off against the Sigma 170-500... Have to say didn't like it.... The push pull zoom is awkward, and to long a throw, found it very big and heavy. The focus speed seemed just a slight bit more positive than the Sigma, which was quicker the 75-300 canon!!
When you consider the price, the max length, 500 vs 400, the size, weight, the variable reports of the 100-400, the handling, it's occasional use, ie Airshows, Motorsport or wildlife...... The choice became easy.... Plus I don't like the willy waving off white colour !!!!
So now I'm trying to find all the controls on a Canon interface, after having Nikon for so long....... First point Canon lost, on off switch, crap position, Nikon's is far better....
The 5D feels really solid, and makes a wonder solid clunk when you fire the shutter,
Oh what a relief to see a view finder with the correct size image again...
My biggest problem, fitting Contax/Zeiss lens, the adaptor is very tight fit to lens, I may need to mod it slightly.... and it connects great with an 80-200mm F4 lens.... but the 18mm lens, the one I bought it for, causes the shutter to fire twice, and says error on the top screen.
Makes no sense to me, as the two are identical in mount and connection.....
I've ordered another, different brand to see if it solves it.
Ok.. back to working out where all the controls are .......
