I previously used a Netgear 4G LTE Modem (LB1120) for mobile broadband with failover.

I'm wondering if anyone has seen anything similar for 5g.

Tested 5g where I am with a Vodafone sim and can get 300mb/s downstream with a ping of 13ms, which I'm happy with indoors. Now just need some proper hardware.

So far the only device I could find is a D-Link AC2600 at over £400. Suffice to say it's more than I want to pay, and is out of stock everywhere anyway.

Not much of an improvement in price (300ish) but the D-Link DWR-2101 mobile hotspot has a gigabit ethernet port on it so if you have a decent router already you could connect it to that. All the 5g hardware i've seen so far has been very expensive.

If you've still got the netgear modem I'd give it a go, I've seen 4g+ speeds hit 250+ in a central Cardiff office. I said to my colleagues - if I could get that at home I'd ditch my fiber connection!

The only real option is the Huawei Cpe Pro 2 plumbed into a Wifi6 router and that’s what i have ordered for testing.

In 18 months time there will be over a dozen options, unfortunately the Chinese are ahead of the market but that lead won’t last much into 2022 so i have accepted it for what it is and bit the bullet.

I will have my eyes on CES in January for a replacement.

Should be more coming to the market end of the year.

I've tried a few of them to date. Huawei CPE Pro (not the 2 as they removed the external antenna support!). I ditched this before I had the roof mounted antenna. Should have kept it for longer. I've recently had the TCL (Alcatel) Link Station but the external antenna connections just refused to work, so returned for a refund. Got my eye on either trying the D-Link DWR-978 or the Zyxel NR5101 next when available. Then later on in the year Billion will have their BiPAC 5500A out. I think TP-Link are also working on a 5G router too. The main thing to remember when buying these is check the bands. A lot, especially the Oppo's and such likes don't support the bands here in the UK. Not just for 5G, I'd personally have a good think about what happens if you fall back to 4G. You might, for example with EE, need Bands 1,3,7 and 20. :)

I'm back at the moment on my Huawei B818-263 on 4G+ with EE. And since aiming the new directional antenna on the roof properly I'm seeing some decent speeds. Quicker than most people's fiber broadband, especially on upload. I saw just over 250Mbps the other day. :)
