My son lost his phone so I blocked the SIM and they have sent a replacement. The phone I have bought him is the S21 5G. They said they'd activated the SIM yesterday but it's saying emergency calls only. Do I need a 5G specific SIM?

All three SIMs support 5G I believe. And even if they didn't it would still fall back to 4G if activated.

Sounds like it's not activated. Sometimes it takes a whole and you need to turn off/on.

Sounds like you just need to wait a while for it to activate assuming it's a replacement sim for the same account.

5G will work on any sim afaik.

I've had the same SIM since well before 5G rollout on Three, and in a new phone this week it's running 5G, so the SIM being "5G enabled" shouldn't be your issue.

I’m surprised they said yesterday. In all my dealings with telcos in the past they only activate on ‘business’ days do so unless it happens by Friday you’re pretty much SOL until Monday.

Tried reinserting the SIM a few time and if you go into setting and general management (where you factory reset) you can pick network settings reset which sometimes helps
