5GHz networking not showing

Virgin have recently installed 60MB fibre and a Supberhub 2 (a lot better than the SH1 I previously had). The router is broadcasting in g and n; tablets and phones see both networks fine however both my PCs don't. The HTPC next to the router refuses to see the 5GHz network at all, using a TP-Link TL-WN781ND 150Mbp Wireless Lite N (V1) adapter in that. I have tried installing the Atheros drivers instead of the default Windows driver - no luck. In fact the TP Link drivers from their website were acting funny. Both the driver and utility would not install as it said the device wasn't plugged in, it definitely was. I had to manually install the driver and all variations of the driver (TP Link/Windows/Atheros) still won't allow the utility to see the card. Absolutely no problems with the 2.4GHz network.

Same problem for my main rig in the room next door (Asus USB-N53 Wireless) though I think it couldn't see either, doubt it's distance as all other devices work fine in my room (less then 15 feet from the router) and anywhere else in the flat including upstairs.

Scratching my head at this, the only common thing between the two machines is Windows 8. Any ideas.

They share the same VXXXX name but one has 2G at the end and the other 5G. A follow up question:

I have a TP Link WDR3600 router, my HP Microserver N54L and the Superhub 2. Before we received the internet I added the N54L to the TP Link network so my house mates could stream all the content from the box to their devices. This was done through Emit on Android and also through the N54L's TP Link 150Mbps card.

After Virgin's installation I thought I would change the SH2 to modem mode and have the WDR3600 do all the work and then plug in the N54L into it via ethernet. However when I activate the NIC on the N54L the machine struggles to boot and if you do none of the USB devices work. I also couldn't get the modem mode to work; at my previous house I simply switched modes and popped an ethernet between the SH and WDR3600. This time the internet simply didn't work. Any ideas?

My question is what is the best configuration to use? Will the N54L manage to push any content (SD up to 1080p) to the preferred router through the 150Mbps card sufficiently? I tried connecting the N54L to the SH2 network but Emit didn't seem to work. Can the SH2 do all I need? It certainly seems to be doing a good job for distance/connection.

It only has problems with the NIC when you enable it in the BIOS. I haven't actually been able to use it as I can't either get into Windows or if I do, use it as they keyboard or mouse don't work. The port works as the lights come on when enabled and a cable is plugged in. Microserver forum reckons it's a conflict issue and I should strip the machine down to the bare minimum to see if the problem still persists.

Can someone confirm my TP Link router and the SH2 should work fine together, specifically the SH2 using modem mode?

Turns out the NIC not working is Windows/HP conflict as others are having the same problem. Only thing I can do is leave is disabled for now.

The other ground floor bedroom is a bit of a WiFi dead zone, it really isn't that far away but the thick walls between must play a part. Signal for both 5/2.4Ghz drops significantly to 0-1 bars. Would a WiFi extender be a good solution? My housemate basically wants better signal for his Nexus 7 in his bedroom.

I assumed it would do when I bought it but didn't check when someone suggested earlier it doesn't. How strange! My ancient HP Touchpad running 4.1.2 picks up the 5GHz network but my house mate's Nexus (2012) doesn't. Odd.

Installing the utility for the N53 seemed to do the trick.

So close. I seem to have no problems getting the internet through ethernet with the SH2 in modem mode. However it won't work through WiFi; I have disabled DHCP in the router settings and set the LAN IP at 192.168.0.50. What am I missing?

So I basically don't need to change any of the settings in the router settings? I tried this method a couple of weeks back I had the same problem.
