Ok, I have decided to scrap the BMW Z4 idea, although I can just about afford it, it will leave me with no money for ages and I really can't do that for various reasons including it is crazy to get that for a first car! That'll be a car for next year. :D

So back to square one, my short list really is down to 1 again. (discounted the Civic now, too expensive for what it is). The logical choice:-

Toyota Yaris.

If I can't think of anything else, that's what I am going to get, but i feel there might be better cars out there for the same money? Budget is £5k. Insurance wise it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference when I looked it up online. A 1.3L Yaris came back with £800 Fully comp and £1100 for a BMW 2.8L 3 series Fully Comp.

Throw me some ideas people.

Oh, economical isn't that high on the list either, I am only going to do 5,000 miles a year. It will be nice but as long as it is not like 20mpg then it'll be fine.

Will throw in the obligitory Mondeo shout :D

Does it need to be particularly new?

Maybe also take a look at the Clio, Polo and Golf, although you'll probably be paying more for less with the Golf.

It doesn't have to be new, in fact, it has to be secondhand. I don't want that initial depreciation hit. Mondeo is too big for me, the focus would be the biggest car I think on the list.

IF it was me and my money I would probably be looking towards focus's with either the ghia or titanium models being my preference. Since you're only doing low mileage I wouldn't be bothered about high mileage cars as when you come to sell it there's a good chance it will have leveled out with the average miles for a car that age and I'd buy on condition and service history.

Sorry should have been clearer, I knew you want something second hand just wondered if you had any preference for how old you minded it being.

How do you go from "I want a z4 but its going to be expensive so I wll get a Yaris instead" ?
Anyway 5 grand gets you hundreds of different cars if your not bothered about economy.
Surely you need to give people a few criteria before they can make an informed suggestion

First car...5K

For small type car - Mini, Yaris, Fiesta, Mx5
Medium size car - Focus....about the best in that size? maybe a 1 series? probably not enough for a nice one??????
Large - Mondeo, 3 series?

for fun car that soooooo not a good idea...Classic Uk turbo impreza ;-)

Toyota Corolla T-Sport Facelift 2004+

You'll get a very nice one for that money

Even newer, Yaris 1.8SR, no where near as quick but quite rare and nice little motors and will be cheaper to insure and tax
