5k iMac questions

Hi all,

I'm doing a lot more photo editing and as much as I like my Retina MBP, I don't like faffing around connecting it up to my PC screen all the time and I want to edit my stuff in the living room. If I go upstairs on my PC I'll end up gaming and not doing photo work.

So I'm pretty much set on getting a 5k iMac to do the editing work and putting it downstairs. I can see on the Apple site that I can upgrade the RAM, so I'll order it with the base 8GB and then buy a 16GB from Crucial and run 24GB in it. I doubt I'd notice any difference between 24 and 32.

Is it possible to buy my own 1TB SSD? I couldn't find an article on the Apple site. I'd want to go for the Crucial drive as I have the same in my PC and I like the speed, plus I've never had an issue with Crucial before.

Also, which mouse should I go for? I tried a magic mouse a few years ago and didn't like it, is it possible to use the trackpad only with such a high resolution, and if not, what's the normal Apple mouse like to use daily?

Finally, is there a replacement on the horizon? I'm in no way desperate (except of course having shiny new Apple gear), but I don't want to spend north of £2000 when something else is about to be released.

You CAN upgrade the Ram yourself as you are doing.
You CANNOT upgrade the hard drive yourself.

Broadwell/Skylake are out in the next few months as are some new/rebadged? AMD GPU's.

Personally I would wait to see if Broadwell/Skylake make any difference.

Okay, I would have thought a replacement wouldn't be out till the end of the year?

Is it worth upgrading the GPU at all for Lightroom work? I'd have thought not.

Screw it, just ordered one.

I hope the 1TB fusion drive is quick enough, I think it will be, my RAW files live on my NAS anyway. Shame I can't swap it out but hey ho.

Although you are not technically allowed to swap the HDD out it is actually very easy to do (easier than the 2011). Just make sure you pick up genuine apple tape kits to replace the screen.
I did it on my 2012 (replacing the 1tb with a 500gb ssd) and I am about to upgrade my new retina iMac 1tb to a 960gb crucial. I plan on breaking the fusion and having the 128gb as a boot and the 960gb for apps etc

From what I've read it looks like there may be a new revision of iMac due this year. Design the same but with broadwell CPU and GPU updates. The non 5k models will finally lose the Nvidia 755s. I think they may introduce USB C and possibly Thunderbolt 3 as well.

Skylake looks to be year after where I think there will be a design change, slimmer black screen bezel?

Just my guesses.

Just the standard one, I have a 16 core SLI 980 PC for gaming. The iMac will be solely for browsing, photo editing and occasional video editing.

Well I now have the second one though, after I returned the first due to the price drop, and I wanted to change the spec.

Only issue I have is that it never, ever, wakes up from sleep. Any ideas?
