£5k to 6k practical hatch

Please don't buy an old-model Astra because they're crap. They really are rather uninspiring turds in 1.6 form.

£6k will get you a low mileage Fiat Grande Punto.

I'd probably suggest the Focus, but failing that, what about an Alfa 147 with leather etc.

Seems an odd comparison as it is quite a bit smaller. Bravo would be a similar size but I'm not sure they are possible for £6k.

edit- Looks like they are, including the 1.4 T-Jet which would be my engine of choice.

Though can't see how the OP could go wrong with a mk5 golf. Seems just right for this sort of budget.

You can't see how he can go wrong with a Mk5 Golf for £5k? There are plenty of opportunities to go wrong. I'm sure the odd one exists but there are lots of ways to go wrong at this end of the Golf market!

Odds on that the OP made the decision to buy the Astra before pressing the Submit New Thread button, and the impending new car thread will feature photographs of an astra-esque nature? :p

I'd recommend a focus over an astra personally.

If you need something sporty and good looking it simply has to be a Vauxhall Astra. It looks really sporting and awesome, and not at all like a dreary generic plastic hatchback. It's completely right that you should buy a cack car because it looks sporty.

Go for the 1.6 Astra, they are amazing.

couldnt agree more ;)

OP... Never, EVER ask advice regarding a new car when an Astra/Vauxhall is a possibility. Everyone will do their best to drum it in to you that you are wrong!

I can't believe no-one has suggested a Skoda Octavia (even LordRobs!). For £6500 you can get a decent 2006 Mk II vRS (197bhp) or a VERY nice L&K with every toy you could possibly imagine on it.

They are virtually unbreakable, cheap to run and insure and they're insanely good value used.

Main criteria is looks and how sporty it looks! Doubt a skoda badge would please the op's girlfriend

ighnore me itsd all over
sorry natthan i hope you had a good one i realy do

but 6they got that badge on the back that sahs skoda what youy gonna do:?

I'm going to remember that the Berlin wall came down 20 years ago and Skoda jokes stopped applying once VW bought them. These are better finished than the equivalent Audi or VW and they are assembed from effectively the same parts.

Badge snobbery goes so far, but at this end of the market Skoda makes an awful lot of sense.
